Right Awn Friday!: Blowing smoke

It’s that time again, kinda.

On the heels of the wildly successful inauguration of “Kudos of the Week” last week, I thought it was time for a change. It was getting stale and predictable. And so, like government wire tapping scandals, I’m changing the name and making what’s old, new again!

Welcome to Right Awn Friday! This is the one time during the week where I like to pause and reflect on a story that just makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over (which coincidentally and in actuality, I am).

So who gets the big ups this week? Get your fists ready and find out after the jump…

Yesterday, California officially said that second hand smoke is like a bad thing:

California became the first state in the country Thursday to place secondhand tobacco smoke alongside tailpipe and smokestack exhausts as a toxic air pollutant and candidate for regulation.

And, while that is certainly Right Awn! worthy, I prefer to recognize the efforts of individuals who really try to make a difference in this crazy, crazy world. This week, that person is the guy who was in the Toyota Prius Hybrid parked on the curb that I walked by this morning. Why? Well first, because he was doing us all a favor by driving a hybrid and releasing fewer toxins into our air. But the second reason: he was smoking in his car, with the windows rolled up.

He has obviously taken California’s new mandate to heart by doing all he can to not release toxic air pollutants into our atmosphere. And, for that, I raise my fist into our cleaner air, and say… RIGHT AWN! Smoker Hybrid Dude!

You know, we could outlaw fire altogether. From brick ovens to camp fires, smoke is no longer allowed in California. From now on, we will only cook and heat ourselves with Indian burns. Doesn’t that just shout UTOPIA?

Woo Hoo! Good news for California!

This will allow landlords to ban smoking in their rental units. Anyone who has lived in a cheap apartment above a smoker knows that smoke comes right up through the cracks and can permeate your home.

People seem to think that smoke just goes away, that it disappears into the atmosphere. Poisonous heavy metals and radioactivity from second hand smoke has been detected a week after it was deposited. A WEEK.

I can see the bumper stickers now:

When they come to take my BBQ, they will have to pry it from my cold dead hands. (This will be really hard to do because my hands will be sticky with a spicey honey bbq sauce)

BBQing doesn’t kill people- DEEP FAT FRYING kills people

If they outlaw BBQs, only outlaws will have BBQs
