I’ve noticed a number of L&L Hawaiian Barbecues opening up in our region. Has anyone tried their fare? Heard any mention? Seen any of their owners abusing the homeless?
If you have, let me know. Mahalo.

I have been to the one in that south area/EG mall that has a Border’s. It was great.

Great call, sac-eats. I have been thinking about this for weeks. There is a new L & L or Q & Q or Q & L, not sure now, in the works over by Watt & El Camino (Next to a new Sushi place, shocker), but has seemed to stall in recent months.

I went to the L&L by Frys on Northgate. It was ‘eh’. The chicken was decent – sort of a heavily marinated, very lightly grilled taste. The chicken’s texture was weird though – sort of spongy, like it came out a box. It was tender though, and the taste wasn’t bad. The macaroni was basically mayonnaise and macaroni (not in a good way like macaroni salad), and eating pure mayonnaise is nasty. The decor was non-existent, and the space was really small. I’d give it two stars, and I haven’t been back.

Just reading about eating pure mayonnaise brings back a fond childhood memory. True story: My sister used to chase me around the house with an open jar of mayonnaise and the smell would make me so sick she could get me to do her chores. It still haunts me.

Ooh, I’m sure you’ve just stimulated sac-eats’ interest with the “eating pure mayonnaise” comment, and he is indeed the Priest of the Church of Best Foods (or Hellman’s for you east of the Mississippi types.) He has indeed been known to eat pure mayonnaise & love it. (I’m with you though, Carl, mayo is nasty.)

The irony in these Hawaiian BBQ places is that authentic Hawaiian food is nasty.

1) I will eat mayonnaise straight out of a jar, vessel, glass, dog’s mouth, etc. I believe that Best Foods mayonnaise is a member of the holy trinity of condiments which include Heinz Ketchup and Mendicino mustard.
2) Good call, Stickie. Aren’t these the same people who consume more spam than any other state in the union? And, what’s with the BBQ in the title? As far as I can tell, all their dishes are fried. I’m not sold on the HI BBQ idea in general. Mahalo.

The soups arent too bad. Cheap (like $4) and taste pretty good. The musubi (sp?) was weird, a huge chunk of rice with spam (or chicken or whatever) on top, all tightly wrapped with seaweed. But that was only $1.50 or so. I guess you get what you pay for?

Tried the one in Orangevale twice. Had Katsu, and Katsu Curry (to feed my fried food craving). My general impression is of a large quantity of mediocre food at fairly low prices. Other dishes may be better. I may go back again, but won’t miss it if I don’t.
Saw something in a print ad about “web specials” (their corporate website also posts the menu) – might be worth a google.
