OK, I’ll say it, but I know this will likely cause a massive uproar.
Biba is overrated.
Biba herself is a lovely woman (and her husband is a caring and compassionate physician), but I think other restaurants are more deserving of the “best” title when local publications issue their “Best of Sacramento” lists.
I’ve never been impressed with the ambience, as the decor seems stuck in the ’80s — it seriously has not changed since I first went there on a date in 1989. My former office was near Biba, so we dined there quite frequently for lunch and dinner with work associates over the years, and the place has just never thrilled me. There are many other places I’d rather go for a special occasion or night out with friends.
Here are restaurants I feel offer top-quality fare with better surroundings:
Moxie: Moxie uses the freshest ingredients in a varied menu that offers both traditional and daring options. The staff is effusive; the restaurant has a cool “hep cat” vibe, and the prices are shockingly reasonable for the quality and quantity of servings
The Kitchen: If you’re going to spend the money, go here for a full night of culinary entertainment and superior service.
Enotria: A treasure on Del Paso Boulevard, the menu is expertly tailored to the best fresh ingredients, and the wine list is seemingly endless. The indoor and outdoor dining area are equally romantic and inviting, and best of all, Enotria is in the Entertainment book. The restaurant also features special wine pairing dinners and other special events.
The Firehouse: Did you know that The Firehouse has a fantastic happy hour menu? I discovered this a couple months ago following a meeting in Old Sac, and this is not your father’s Firehouse. While maintaining its traditional roots, The Firehouse keeps its menu updated but also still offers classic favorites.
With countless newer restaurants in Sacramento, not to mention all my favorite ethnic dives, there is a world of cuisine to explore — so get out there and eat!
