Nothing shows our Sacramento like whales accidentally swimming upriver. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is about this occurrence and the news it generates that amuses me so. I think it has much to do with the fact that it is a completely random natural anomaly — like a hermaphroditic sheep or Lindsey Lohan — but since we live on the river and have the news 24/7 we have kind of come to expect it. It is given the sort of seasonal reverence that the cicadas get back east. But it’s really more akin to sap on a maple tree in the shape of a Saint, if you think about it. Anyway it amuses me. I hope these gentle giant idiots get the technical assistance they need to find their way back into the ocean.
(By the way, I kid the whales. I do really hope they’re not in danger and I think I probably would go see them in Rio Vista.)

I heard on Good Day Sacramento that the whales were a parent and child. Maybe we should call them Lindsay and Dina, in honor of the Lohans?

A breaking news alert on my phone just told me that the whales are headed toward West Sac. Maybe they too have heard the great things about the salsa at Sal’s or Emma’s Taco House. They’d better not go into IKEA since they’ll *really* get lost in there.

Cool. I’ll look for their yelp reviews. I haven’t been there yet myself, and sometimes it’s good to get an out of towner’s view of the local scene.
I can see it now; “I got lost on my way to the Straits of San Juan y Quadra. I totally mistook the bay inlet for the mouth of the columbia river. I was hungry for fresh salmon, but oh what an unexpected treat I got…”
