Yo mamma walks into a bar
News10.com reports that a local elementary school principal has banned the telling of “yo mamma” jokes on campus.
We see good kids just sitting there going back and forth with each other and I’m like what are you doing? Oh, we saw it on TV and were just doing ‘Yo Momma’ jokes, don’t worry about it.
And he was like, “what are you doing?” and they were like, “nothing, just telling jokes” and he was like “oh, no you’re not” and they were like…
When the kids get in trouble, when the kids get in fights and the cyber-bullying starts and they tell me specifically that they were doing ‘yo momma’ jokes, then yes it changes their behavior…
Cyber-bullying? At any rate, I’m not sure what to think of this. Will a ban on certain types of jokes really control behavior? I can just see this spawning a new line of jokes whereby the kids find a loophole in the rules and get there digs in. Maybe something like “Yo Daddy” or “Yo Cousin”.
Yo cousin so stupid it takes her two hours to watch 60 minutes
Doesn’t quite have the ring to it, I know, but stick with it kids, it’ll catch on.
This reminds me…I’ve been meaning to bring back, “that’s what she said”. Who is with me?

If you grew up here, you’ll know
I was bummed today to read this article about the land that used to house the Oakwood Lake Resort in Manteca (aka Manteca Waterslides). As mentioned on this here web log several times over the years, it’s somehow more painful to know the details of its future. I know many of us spent our summer days trying to swap out our colored mats without getting caught. And for those moments of childhood bliss, I say farewell!
Maybe they’ll build a commemorative slide on one of those artificial lakes…

Only in Sacramento…
Last week two very incredible things happened to me, and they both I think have everything to do with life here in Sacto. First of all, we found out that one of my daughter’s preschool classmates lives in the house I grew up in. Her parents actually bought it from my parents about 4 years ago, and now she is one of 24 or so kids in my daughter’s class.
The second one is I think even weirder. Continue reading “Only in Sacramento…” »

Hulk sighting
A friend told me about an hour ago that his wife had just spotted Hulk Hogan at a local 24 Hour Fitness, obviously coinciding with his daughter Brooke’s appearance at 107.9 The End’s Halloween party last night. Who among you (okay, among you 25-35 year old males) does not picture him strutting his stuff in the original yellow and red spandex? Ah, nostalgia…

More local nostalgia on KVIE
Via Heckasac, a heads’ up from musician/producer J Greenberg:
Wednesday at 7pm, KVIE will air a program that I produced, and that I’m very proud of. If you have an interest in Sacramento History– particularly the strange stuff that doesn’t make it into the history books — then I hope you’ll tune in to Channel 6 for HIDDEN HISTORY…
In this program, hosted by comedian Jack Gallagher, we visit sites like the Old City Cemetery and the Sacramento Archives to unearth strange tales of Sacramento history. Things like…an airship hovering over the Capitol dome seven years before the Wright Brothers made their famous flight. Or an amateur filmmakers’ club that saved the American River Parkway…
Sounds fun!

What’s to become of Capitol Boxing Gym?
Updated at 10:35 on 10/19…
If you’ve ever driven on Stockton Blvd around Tahoe Park, you’ve probably seen Capitol Boxing Gym. It was remarkable for its colorful cartoon murals and the fact that it said BOXING in big letters. It was sold in 2004 by the Guevara family that ran it for 35 years (link to a nice News & Review article from 2004), and just this week it has started undergoing some sort of a facelift. “Sacramento: The Good Old Days Remembered”
Mrs. Cool and I caught a bit of a KVIE program called “Sacramento: The Good Old Days Remembered” last night. If you’re a huge fan of local nostalgia this is a definite must see. The basic setup is nothing new–a bunch of old timers reminiscing about the old days in Sactown, with segments on the Solons, Alhambra Theater, Land Park, and “Joyland,” a turn-of-the-century amusement park in Oak Park, it will provide countless trivia tidbits that will make you the talk of every gathering. One timely segment we saw was on the beginnings of the Tower chain.

Recalling Mr. Steak
Yesterday I was telling my wife about Mr. Steak. From my interweb research it looks like the brand is thriving in the Midwest, but the Sacramento location, which stood somewhere near the Border’s on Fair Oaks, is of course lost to all but the memories of those of us who ate there in the 1980s (and before, I assume).
So I was telling Mrs. Cool about it (for the dozenth time I’m sure, although probably less frequently since I started this here web log) and I got to the part where I was describing some of the items on the kids’ menu and I distinctly recall there being a chicken dish on there labeled “Matt Chicken.” Am I remembering that right? I remember from the time assuming that it was a play on “Matt Houston,” the brilliant Texas millionaire/LA private dick (played by Lee Horsley). And that’s about as far into the nether reaches of my subconscious as I think we should go today. Matt Chicken, anyone?
