Today marks the first year of publication here at The Sac Rag, and we couldn’t have done it without You, our dedicated readers and commenters, and the occasional wack job who helped us cause a mild stir. What started with two writers has ballooned into a crack writing staff of a dozen covering everything from shopping and eating to news and sports. Some numbers: 615 posts, 1651 comments, zero awards, 2 mentions in the Bee, 399 visitors on our biggest day (11/4/2005).
We thought we would share some of our thoughts on this momentous occasion, and the thoughts of at least one local celebrity…

Say what you will about Burning Man “… I don’t git why them hippies and yuppies got to go all the way to Nevada just to get stoned and get nekkid and burn somthin’ …” but if you want to do one thing truly great this year, join your friends on the playa to help break the Guinness world record for the longest Chinese festival dragon.
We’re talking two miles of colorful, history-making, fire-spitting dragon fun. Imagine telling your future grandchildren about this amazing feat of art!

KCRA reports that police say a vehicle crashed into a building in Sacramento. What, KCRA, you couldn’t tell?
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — One person died early Thursday after a van crashed into the side of thrift store in the Foothill Farms area, police reported.
As of 6:30 a.m., investigators were at the scene trying to determine why the vehicle smashed into the side of a thrift store at the corner of Auburn Boulevard and Garfield Avenue.
The thrift store sits in a building that was formerly a Kmart store.
Despite the tragic outcome, it says something about the newsworthiness of this type of story when the fact that the building was a Kmart at some point in time is considered an equally important detail to note.

Will somebody just go out with the gay millionaire already? I feel sad for him. I mean you know he works out, and plus it sounds like he’s some sort of doctor, seems like he’d be able to get a date.

As far as I can tell, this comment by sac-eats was comment #1000. Maybe comment #2000 will be from a non-contributor.

I don’t think I’m taking too much liberty in using this forum to wish our fearless co-leader COOLDMZ an amazingly happy birthday. I thought about putting something clever like “It’s Yo Birfday” until I realized that that wouldn’t actually be all that clever. So I’ll just go with a simple “Happy Birthday” and leave it at that. Anyone care to join me?

I’m not claiming to be the foremost Internet researcher, but via Literature.org, via Google, via Websnark.com, via Rachel Leibrock… “The Hunting of the Snark” by Lewis Carroll.
When I started using it here I had gotten it from Television Without Pity, but the specifics of the reference are lost now. I think it was on a t-shirt.
