It is always the children who are affected the most.
Good Day Sacramento has been in quite the transition this summer. First, it was the move of their set over to CBS13’s locale. Fortunately, the transition went off relatively smooth. One wonders however, the stress this put on Good Days’ own 40+ year old child, Mark S. Allen.
As the CoolOne brought to you some days ago, MSA was recently pulled over at the airport by the County cops, on the suspicion of being drunk. This morning, the “on-scene” reporter at the Cal Expo plant sale intimated that there were “special plants in the back” for MSA that the reporter could not identify on the air. Not to mention the fact that other Good Day personalities are exposing themselves in public…what’s going on over there? Are these desperate cries for help?
While it wouldn’t surprise anyone if MSA was in fact drunk or had some kind of problem with narcotics (perhaps he’s ODing on teeth bleach), could his turning to the bottle be a symptom of more than just a man in his 40s who still shops at Pacific Sunwear in a version of Peter Pan Syndrome?
I submit to you, dear reader, that there is something more going on.

Speaking of current and former Good Day Sacramento talent, a helpful reader emailed me just now and reminded me to point out an item Graswich included in his column today, which I will copy and paste in its entirety in case you didn’t see it:
Fly away: Rough weekend for Channel 31 Good Day Sacramento star Mark S. Allen. The TV personality was stopped by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies while driving through Sacramento Intergalactic Airport. Deputies called the Highway Patrol to test Allen’s sobriety, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Allen can be wild and crazy on TV, but he behaved himself in custody, CHP Officer Lizz Dutton said. No comment from Mark. …
All emphasis R.E.’s except Highway Patrol, which I have bolded because I thought it would be funny in a Jackie Harvey way.
(Completely beside the point: Even Graswich makes fun of SMF’s International status? I don’t know why people don’t understand this: You can fly to Mexico, which is another nation, meaning you can travel between 2 nations, which is the definition of the word international. I looked it up. I don’t want to hear anybody making fun of it anymore.)

I caught some of Good Day Sacramento this morning. It’s a train wreck. Not sure if that is the intent, but it’s sort of slapped together with little to no production value as if they are literally making this stuff up as they go.
For example, Nick threw it to UPN 31’s “tech” guru (I forget her name already) who was going to walk the viewers through the new “Gas Watch” section of their website which includes a map of local gas prices (a la gasbuddy.com). This was a painful process. Watching her fumble about the site trying to find an actual reported gas price (and if she did, it was 5 or more days old) was brutal. So much so that a few of us at the gym watching this on our individual treadmill monitors changed channels almost simultaneously. Then Mark S. comes on with that silly haircut to talk about the new September 11, 2001 movie, which really didn’t work. Hard to talk about something so serious while trying to blow your overgrown, highlighted bangs out of your face.
And yes, Scooter, I know, I know, there’s a method to his madness…

Just got the heads-up from Game Guy Scott Fera that he’ll be on Good Day Sacramento tomorrow during the 7 and 8:00 hours to talk about one of his favorite new games, “Guitar Hero.”
UPDATE: The 7:00 hour appearance was top-notch local television, with Game Guy showing his chops on the classic “Iron Man,” the anchor’s desk playing right into the fun, and Tina Macuha getting into character as a rabid groupie.

If you’ve lived in Sacramento for a long time, Tina Macuha is one of those local media people, like Stan Atkinson or that Australian guy on KWOD, whose voice and/or image gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling, like Sacramento is a thick wool blanket, smothering the very life out of you. Tina’s current haunt is the traffic desk at Good Day, where every morning she posts an Oprah-esque quote, fresh from the HP Laserjet (today’s was “Feed Your Soul” or something). Her “Sign of the Day,” I see it’s called as I read her bio.
My gut reaction is annoyance, because so often the phrase makes no sense or gives helpful advice only for someone who had just recently said to themselves, “you know, what my life really needs right now is a pat answer to a question I wasn’t asking.” But then the Sacto homer in me kicks in, and I wonder why she has to resort to printing these things up herself and littering her little workspace with them. From the morning show on FM 102 back in the 80s to being an original “Good Day” host, Tina Macuha owns this town. Couldn’t they maybe spare a nice plaque or frame or something? Maybe a graphic?
