Maybe the SacBee should “Lighten Up”

Posted at 10:54 PM by Stickie in Arts & Entertainment, Links, Local Celebs, Local Media, Local Nooz, Sac Bee, Sac Rag News, Scandals (12 comments)

There has been quite a bit of attention from the Sacramento Bee about the John McCrea story, and I’ve got a few things to say about it. I appreciate the attention to the SacRag, positive, negative or neutral, but I feel the need to correct a few details that I feel the Bee got wrong.

I think Rachel Leibrock missed on a few points. Call it poetic license, call it journalistic opinion, but I call foul. You may have noticed that there are many things in her 21Q blog entry in quotation marks, which I said, and other things that are not, but are attributed to me as they are accompanied by the words “so says”.

Her headline was “Lighten Up Sac – or so says Sacrag writer”. Well, that sentence implies that I said those words. I did not. I never said that Sacramento should lighten up, mellow out, take a chill pill, calm down, cool it now, or float on (oops, that last one shows my age). In fact, I acknowledged to her that I knew that I was running the risk of offending people with this story.

Another quote from her story is the implication that I said, “Ya’ll should step off, too.” Again, I never said anything to this effect. In fact, I don’t think I have ever used the words “step off” in my life, and I would expect my friends to punch me square in the face if they ever heard me utter this phrase.

Most offending to me is her claim that I feel that “SacRag readers don’t have a very good sense of humor”. Whoa. Damn. I have all sorts of problems with this statement.

First and most important, I never said that, nor did I say anything that implies it. In fact, the readers of the SacRag crack me up. Some comments to stories bug me, but I am still amused by the interaction that occurs on this site.

Second, please look at the comments that were made by readers. A total of six readers made negative comments about the story. Six. According to StatCounter, we had 1,053 unique visitors and 551 click-throughs to the entire story. I know that we have this level of daily traffic (although this was a bit more than usual), so I would never judge the readers of the Rag based upon negative comments from only six readers.

Third, I am not arrogant enough to think that if I write something humorous that others do not find funny, that this means that the dissenting readers are somehow deficient. Different strokes for different folks.

To conclude, I don’t want anyone to think that this article is “sour grapes”. We at the Rag provide media commentary and criticism, just as Rachel does when she writes her 21Q blog. Blogging is not necessarily journalism, as a blog provides opinions, interpretations and spin with more individual freedom than a piece of journalism that is subject to editorial control and a more stringent demand for neutrality and a consideration for a well-rounded presentation of opinions. We at the Rag have already acknowledged our mistake; I hope that our counterparts at the SacBee are big enough to do the same.

Simply the best!

David Brent…better than all the rest, as they say. Specifically this here web log, which once again won the News & Review’s Reader’s Choice award for Best Local Blog. MarkTalk.com and Heckasac round out the top three. For those of you playing along at home those are the top three finishers from last year’s voting.

We couldn’t have done it without you readers, of whom at least 7 or 8 must have voted for us. As we’ve said time and again we have a ton of fun doing this and most of that fun is caused by the reactions we get. We’re hoping you’ll stay with us in the coming year.

And we’ll try not to be offended by Heckasac’s obvious ploy to steal our thunder regarding the impending award by announcing again last week that she is quitting again. (We kid the beckler of course.)

Also congrats to my father who repeats as Best Local Doctor. DMZs FTW!!!

UPDATE @ 2:00PM: Because I didn’t think to look in the Luxuries & Necessities category, I failed to notice that we also were voted #3 in the Best local Web site category. Fabulous. Thanks to sac-eats for pointing it out.

Site update

Sorry to pull back the curtain slightly here, but I finally got around to fixing a bug in our WordPress installation which kept the “Logged in user” feature from working properly. In other words, if you’re a registered subscriber to our site, you can log in to post comments and not have to retype your info every time. If you’re not registered, do so today!

The heat is…on

A few weeks ago sac-eats wrote a post “encouraging” folks that read this here web log to vote for it as “Best Local Blog” and/or “Best Local Website”.  Local blogger FFT commented that this effort to garner votes was “shameless”.  Well, via FFT, we learn that there is “a major upset brewing” for Best Blog.  Jeff, over at Eyes for the Brambles, picked up on this post as well.

I can’t guess the upset. Sacrag and hecksac won last year. Have people grown tired of snark and food and rock show reviews?

Well, Sacramento, what local blogs do you think have a chance at taking home the top spot this year?  What makes a good local blog?  Random comments about comments?  Hard hitting local media watchdogging?  Food reviews?  Your random comments are welcome…

Hey winners!

Posted at 8:55 AM by RunnerGirl in Local Celebs, Sac Rag News (8 comments)

You’ll each be glad to know that The Sac Rag was represented well at this past Sunday’s Streets of London Pub Quiz.

With the mental power of sac-eats, Stickie, and RunnerGirl — plus two of Stickie’s most attractive and charming friends — we answered the most questions correctly and brought home the top prize (and the ever-important bragging rights.) We scored 28 out of 30.

Apparently worth a mention…

Posted at 8:55 PM by CoolDMZ in Links, Sac Rag News (13 comments)

Via Central City Opinion it appears that a little magazine called National Geographic has mentioned this here web log in its new Destination Guide to Sacramento. They call us “hip” and highlight the Local Idiots category.

Cheers to all. Congrats to the Sacatomato and Metblogging folks as well.

No, ME blog

Posted at 9:51 AM by CoolDMZ in Sac Rag News (11 comments)

We’re 2 now, so we talk like it. That’s right, today marks the 2nd birthday of this here Web log! According to Wordpress, “There are currently 1,128 post and 4,599 comments, contained within 83 categories.”

I have recently realized that there are more “Sac Rag people” than I can name offhand and I love that. And there are new ones every day. I think it’s a great place to be and I see us growing by leaps and bounds this year. I’m sure I speak for all my compatriates when I say that being part of The Sac Rag is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. Thanks to all the readers for making it a fun 2 years.

Holla at your board!

Posted at 9:03 AM by CoolDMZ in Links, Sac Rag News (1 comment)

Lately we’ve been getting a lot of “I don’t know where to put this” comments, from document dumping to appointment TV spoilers, so I’ve decided to dust off an old idea and reintroduce The Rag Board, a community forum. This time it’s powered by bbPress, a robust forum software built by the WordPress people.

Sign up today and start posting. Feel free to send me ideas for new Forums, though the 3 existing ones should give us enough fuel for a while. I’m making a goal of 30 discussions going by the end of April. Have fun!

Spammer infringing The Sac Rag’s copyright?

Posted at 8:42 AM by CoolDMZ in Crime, Legal, Sac Rag News (2 comments)

Free traffic counter is breaking our copyrightAnybody know a good copyright lawyer out there? I can’t tell but I think The Sac Rag’s copyright is being infringed by “ralph myree,” registered owner of “Free Traffic Counter” which as pictured is reprinting an article by sac-eats without attributing it to our site. However, the link for “Original post” does point to our post. Is there a name for this type of site? I assume it is just built to generate Adsense revenue. Maybe I’ll sue Google too, for allowing its service to be used in such a manner!
