Football in Sacramento?

Denny Green of the California Redwoods
It's worth watching again.

For those that are interested in showing lukewarm excitement for news stories like these, the United Football League is going to make a “special announcement” on Wednesday, March 3rd at 2:30 p.m. live on the Interwebs.

Of course, we all know that the announcement is that the San Francisco football Redwoods will be moving to Sacramento. I know, I know. Crazy, huh?

Coached by Dennis Green (of “…they are who we thought they were! And we let ’em off the hook!” fame) and owned by Paul Pelosi (yes, that name does sound familiar) the Redwoods are one of four teams mixing it up in the semi-almost-better-than-arena-football league entering its second season.

“To fulfill the needs of football fans in major markets currently under-served by professional football by providing a high quality traditional football league comprised of world class professional football players. The UFL will serve its communities with pride, dedication and passion, and uphold a leadership role in the development of football worldwide. The UFL will provide every fan with an affordable, accessible, exciting and entertaining game experience.”

Hey, you never know, right? Will you go?

  1. Let me guess:

In January, FOX40 was first to report the likely relocation of the San Francisco franchise in the United Football League. Monday, the league scheduled a press conference for this Wednesday in Sacramento almost certainly to announce the San Francisco Redwoods team will play here this fall. Sacramento State’s Hornet Field is the best bet as a home field for the new team.

  2. I hate to say it, but it totally depends on how they treat beer. If they let me tail gate and have a good time, I might go. If they crack down on responsible drinkers and stop serving after the 3rd…

  3. I am totally in favor of other people going to watch the Redwoods and having a great, inexpensive afternoon of football.

For me, I am sure I will be a theoretical supporter in the same way I have been meaning to go to a Sac State game for years.

But maybe if SacRag used its considerable influence to secure a block of SacRag night tickets, we could check out the scene and maybe evaluate the beer situation firsthand.

  4. Believe it or not… I AM ALL in favor of this! As long as none of my tax money is going to it, I’ll attend at least one game, buy a beer, park, and likely buy a hat/shirt/thong (Grrrowwwwll!!!) with the Sac Redwoods . . . err. . . bush? tree? logo on it. Goooooooo REDWOODS!!!

Semi pro players are 100x more likely to try harder than overpaid NBA players, and, unless tax money is involved, 1000x (yes- one THOUSAND times!) more deserving of your local patronage. Support your local UFL team!

So… are we playing at Curtis Park, or where? An’ fer’ crying out loud players; don’t go raping/DUI’ing/stabbing in the first year, at least? Is that too much to ‘ax?

No, I mean…*yawn* at the idea of a professional football team coming to Sacramento. I’m just making my opinion known like everyone else…in that I don’t really care what sport comes or goes from this town. But thanks for the feedback anyway.

  6. Right, Radio Matthew, right. That’s what you meant.

For a media guy like yourself, it sure seems you could articulate your opinion better than by using one word you’ve used on this site several times.

You were who I thought you were!
