May is Bike Month in Sacramento

Two-wheeled locomotion is all the rage this month in the Sacramento area. May Is Bike Month, sponsored by various local municipalities, public transit agencies, and government groups, is basically a massive jog-a-thon for cycling nuts, only instead of the marching band getting new uniforms, we all just get more time to enjoy cycling. The program’s goal for the area is to log one MEELLION miles, and they already have close to 1.25 million pledged.

In addition to the friendly competition and camaraderie, there are valuable prizes available, and several events are planned, including a cycling film festival (which for some reason doesn’t involve a screening of “The Bicycle Thief” or “Breaking Away”) and a special River Cats event. Your kid can represent his or her school in what I assume is an all-out cycling brawl for bragging rights.

Intrigued? The “Sacramento Region Travel Info” site offers a custom bike trip planner to help you get from A to B.

Of course, this month also has the AMGEN Tour of California, which starts up the hill in Nevada City and ends in the Capital on May 16.

  1. The bike trip planner is pretty slick. It’s not always spot on, of course, but is a great starting point for mapping out a route.

The wind is certainly making it tough to ride to work lately. But, man, are we lucky to have the American River Parkway…

  3. Oh man, the wind is the worst. Funny I didn’t see you riding in to Sac Rag world headquarters RTOI! Oh I forgot, we’re not doing that joke anymore.
