Egg recall
Since I haven’t seen anything in the Sacramento media on this yet, I figure I had better alert readers about the massive egg recall due to salmonella contamination. Supposedly, all of the eggs have been cleared from local stores, but some were spotted at an SF area Safeway, and you might have some sitting in your fridge right now. Click here for details about brands, etc.

STAR test results show slow growth
The 2010 California Standardized Testing and Reporting results were released Monday, and overall the picture continues to be grim, though there are mild improvements over last year:
Fifty-two percent of the students are proficient in English, while 48 percent are proficient in math – an increase of two percentage points in each over last year.
Results in Sac City Unified are basically flat, with 1-3% improvements over last year’s summary scores. The “Science End-of-Course” scores went up by 5%, which is a welcome sight for people concerned with the state of science education these days.
Kupros: What exactly is a “gastropub”?

Kupros, if you haven’t heard, is the new restaurant on 21st Street between Capitol and L. It’s a beautiful update of the building that used to house Cheap Thrills used clothing store. Kupros labels itself as a gastropub, which brings with a it a whole host of connotations. But first, what is a gastropub?
The agreed upon definition of a gastropub is: a pub that specializes in finer than average food. That’s pretty much it, but that’s not really it. Here are some of the connotations, fair or unfair, that come along with the label: beer, wine, European focus, ridiculously good simple food, grease, gravy, low-lighting, wood panelling, classic design, plain paper menus, and edgy chefs with beards and striped aprons.
Wonderfully, Kupros hits on almost every one of the connotations that comes with being a gastropub. The food was pretty darned good, with some homeruns and a few infield singles. The potted rabbit (part of the charcuterie plate) was ridiculously phenomenal. We all made satisfying carnivore noises while crunching it’s meat between our canines. Even the ladies at the table who swore they would never eat a creature so cute inhaled the little bunny like doughnuts at a cop shop. Continue reading “Kupros: What exactly is a “gastropub”?”
Free admission at the zoo today
If your kids are not starting school today and you’re looking for some fun activities, remember that admission to the Sacramento Zoo is free today and next Monday, courtesy of your friends at Target Brands, Inc.
And remember that if you’re there at 11:45am or 2pm you can pay $3 to feed a giraffe. I believe they reimburse you the $3 if the giraffes are not hungry.
Speaking of Target, I was inordinately excited to see the big bullseye logos up on the new super store on 65th last week. I can’t be the only one…
Mr. Lobo tapes live today!
Sacramento’s two best kept film secrets activate their Wonder Twin powers tonight to bring you some awesomely campy horror.
Movies on a Big Screen welcomes Mr. Lobo and his weekly show Cinema Insomnia, which is syndicated throughout the US but (sadly) not broadcast locally. Mr. Lobo provides hilarious commentary and insight to misunderstood and under-appreciated gems from late night film vaults.
Tonight’s feature is The Undertaker and His Pals, a macabre tale of motorcycle riding psychopaths, groovy chicks turned into lunchmeat, and acid-fu. Be there and be square.
Zocalo head chef a Food Network/YouTube star
Ryan Rose, the 28 year old head chef at Zocalo, is one of the 15 finalists in the Food Network’s “The Next Food Network Star” YouTube contest. Guy Fieri is a previous winner of the broadcast version of the contest (Rose is a contestant in the YouTube offshoot), but let’s not hold that against Rose.
I’ve had the birria at Zocalo and that dish alone should make Rose eligible for a Nobel, much less reality competition success. Good luck, local boy!
Here is a link to Rose’s video entry, “Ryan’s Paella.” Upvote and bring home a victory for local eats!
