City Theater’s “Beanstalk” pleases

Over the weekend a friend and I took our families (or they took us) to the City Theater’s Storytime theater production of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The performance offered exactly what you want in children’s theater — a cute little story, some jokes aimed at the parents (in this case, lots of perfectly wholesome SF Giants bits), brisk timing, and not too much overacting. Doug Lawson’s staging is fresh, and it is a tidy piece of theater, with some funny talking cow business (always a necessity in quality children’s theater) and good performances overall.

The space itself, a new black box theater in the West Sac “civic center,” was very enjoyable. I’ve been by the West Sac government complex a few times and it is a pretty campus. A small theater like this, located right next to a large library and across West Capitol from City Hall, is a great asset for our neighbors across the river.

If it’s still raining this weekend and you have little ones and you want to do something out the ordinary, this could be a great activity (perhaps followed by some Swedish furniture shopping? Just a thought.)

  1. Doug Lawson’s been a Giants fan since he could walk, so it figures he’d work them into a show. He’s a wonderful guy, and an excellent teacher. Storytime Theatre is really a cool program, let’s hope the budget cuts don’t make them go dark.

And no, I’m not Doug 🙂

  2. I’m not Doug either but I believe he was a “Giants fan since he could walk”, as his father was wearing a Giants cap when Doug introduced us. We saw another of his productions at City College a while back and it was excellent.
