I’ve been passing this sign recently along a newly protected area on the American River Parkway and finally stopped to see what was going on. It is adjacent to the Capital City Freeway near Cal Expo.
As someone who has incessantly chronicled the displacement of the homeless along the bike trail, I must say that I find it odd that the valley elderberry longhorn beetle gets a better deal than the homeless.

Elderberry Beetles can’t live anywhere else. People can. Elderberry Beetles are endangered. People aren’t.
They’re both getting a raw deal. Pushing the Elderberry Beetle closer to extinction won’t help the homeless at all.

I see lots of tire tracks right behind the sign, and it looks like the field in the background has been mowed or somehow defoliated. And then there is the skidsteer tractor at the back of the field.
A pretty loose interpretation of “must not be disturbed”.

@cogmeyer Yes, the entire area has been fenced off and worked on. A few other signs are up declaring what the project is. I will stop and take a look and report back.
@Jack H I definitely see your point about people not being endangered and the beetle only having a few options on where to live. I’m stuck on the fact that we have an act to protect them subject to fines and imprisonment while people are roaming the streets and parkways looking for a place to call home for the night. But, like you said, there are plenty of raw deals to go around for everyone.
