Sacramento Public Library was announced today as one of 30 finalists for a National Medal for Museum and Library Service presented by Institute of Museum and Library Services. The awards are given to “outstanding institutions that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities.”
SPL is one of only 3 California organizations nominated this year, on a list that includes some top museums and libraries. The Discovery Science Center, a Santa Ana science museum, was one of 10 institutions honored with a medal last year in a White House Ceremony.
Kudos to the folks at SPL who make these programs happen!

I was reading the old comments from 2006 regarding the Mr Steak In St. Charles by the Blanchette Bridge and i was really thinking of their great tasting Onion Straws. I have made them myself in my home and they turned out just as good. I believe the secret is in what type of a deep fryer is used. As for me i simply use a square electric frying pan half filled with canola oil. That way the whole stove doesn’t get all spotty. Anyway Mr Steak isn’t there anymore. Its now a bar called Darby O’Tooles Just what St Charles needed, right? Another Bar.
Oh well. I now live in New York State and still make the Onion Straws at home. I did live in O’Fallon for about 6 months and moved to Granite City ,Il. then here to NYS. I do not miss the hot humid weather there at all. I do miss the Mr Steak restaurant.
