Hey there readers. I know you were just as excited as I when you saw that this month’s issue of Sacramento Magazine featured a special reader’s poll on all the best places to eat. After last year’s good showing for local restaurants, I’m sad to say that Sacramento Magazine readers have slipped a bit and are back to their chain-eating ways. Here’s a few examples: Best Chips & Salsa-Chevy’s, Best Brewpub-BJ’s, Best Burger-In ‘n’ Out. Do I need to say that the region’s best chips and salsa are not at Chevy’s? No, I don’t think so. I would have voted (actually I did vote) for Caballo Blanco which is on the corner of Franklin and Fruitridge. NOTE: Keep your eyes out for a Sac Rag reader’s choice awards coming soon.
Oh, and one more thing: no matter what the Sac Mag readers think, Texas West BBQ is not the best BBQ in Sacramento. Period.

I can understand people will vote for In & Out. But Chevy? Even among similar chain restaurants, Chevy is not even close to be the best. It is these kinds of poll results that tell me I don’t really need to read the Sac. Mag.

i think it would be funny if Mulvaney’s or somebody like that opened a second location, and won “Best Chain Restaurant”…

Did the category read “Best chips and salsa: Chevy’s on the river” ?
Or did it read “Best chips and salsa on the river: Chevy’s” ?

The funny thing is that food writing in Sac Mag is actually really good. They do a darn good job at highlighting local talent, local producers and great regional restaurants. It’s just going to take some work to get the reader’s to try some palate expanders (and I don’t mean orthodonture).

mayhaps this poll says more about the readership of the magazine rather than the food in sac. there aren’t a whole lot of mid-twenty-somethings that read Sacramento magazine. younger crowds are more likely to try new places and order different dishes. i have always felt the magazine was aimed at the older mid 30s and up demographic being that the magazine often looks like a gardening or home magazine. i hardly pick it up, except when i’m in line at starbucks (where i have vowed to never step foot in again).

Sacramento Magazine is firmly aimed at fuddy-duddies and fans of the unexciting of every age category.

Oh, as for the BBQ, check out Cobbler’s on Stockton Blvd next door to the Colonial Theater.

Jesus Christ, BJ’s got named best Brewpub? Well, at least they have stopped singing the praises of the undrinkable swill and overpriced food at Brew-It-Up or the tepid yuppie-juice at Pyramid.

Dude, you’re still wrong on Texas West. I will make the slight concession that their Roseville location’s food tends to be better than on Fulton.
Even News and Review readers put Texas West at number two behind Sandra Dee’s. Did the guys at TW knock over your grandma or what?
