Local connection for “Rock Band”

Posted December 3, 2007 at 12:00 PM by CoolDMZ in Arts & Entertainment

I played “Rock Band” for the first time last night (with our own The Game Guy, natch). If you have not played “Guitar Hero” or “Rock Band,” you must know that they are probably the most fun things invented in a long time. They are like a video game you would invent inside a dream (like the giant fighting robot holographic gladiator game I dreamt of once). I rocked the drums on “Wanted Dead or Alive” and aped Jagger on “Gimme Shelter” (which was semi challenging as the game made me also sing the female backup vocal).

One of the unlock-able “bonus” songs in the hottest new video game around is “Time We Had,” a track off the latest release by The Mother Hips, a Chico-based California rock band who has rocked the Sacramento area since the early 90s. It got me thinking…what would an all-Sacto “Rock Band” set list look like?

Of course you would have to be able to rock out to Cake’s “Short Skirt Long Jacket.” And you could make it the hardest video game ever by including a song by Hella that can only be played on Expert. Let’s hear it, Sacramento: what other songs would be must-haves in a Sacramento-only Rock Band set list?

My first thought is Tesla’s Modern Day Cowboy. Ripping solo at the end of that one.

I’d have to put some Liani Moore on the set list. I’d also drop some Midnight Academy, Deftones, and Cake as well. Maybe some local Torch Club talent as well. I’d also have to figure out a way to add Dusty Brown in there too.

Wish there was a place to play Guitar Hero locally besides Marilyn’s on Wednesday nights. Surprised more places haven’t started a Guitar Hero night.

Deftones – Elite has some monster riffage.

7 Seconds, Far, Okra Pickles are all fun choices.

I need to pick through my Jackpot CD’s and pick a winner.

Someone also needs to invent a video game called Mandolin Hero.

(Padre, you can play at R-15 in a small room off to the side)

You could unlock some sweet Nickel Creek tunes on Mandolin Hero.

For Jackpot… “Psycho Ballerina”?

For Tesla it has to be “What You Give”… best damn song ever

(I may be incorrect on these song titles as I’m pulling them from hazy memory…)

Okra Pickles – Grooves a Smoovie
Mac Swanky Trio – Super Flash Burnin’ Nitro
Sex 66 – Grew Up Down
Magnolia Thunderfinger – Chicken Legs
Daisy Spot – Stuck in the Mud
The Knockoffs – You Make Me Sit Funny
Groovie Ghoulies – Beast with Five Hands

You could probably find cool tunes by Two Sheds, Milwaukee, Agent Ribbons, Didley Squat, Pets, The Snobs, and Th’ Losin Streaks too. Might be even more fun to stretch it to Davis and throw in some Thin White Rope.
