I always felt bad that I had teased the folks at Boon Boon, especially after a commenter pointed out that the restaurant is named after the owner’s mother. The fact that several commenters on that post remarked on discussions with the staff at Boon Boon is very telling about the kind of place Boon Boon is. I’m glad that I finally checked it out, because this is a little gem of a place.

This is the right kind of fusion for me–it’s not so much specific menu items that are tweaked, it’s the menu as a whole. Thai favorites like curries and pad thai are alongside spaghetti and meatballs and “Southern Great Steak” (”A great recipe from a Southern Attorney who bring on tasty Prime selected quality Rib Eye beef same grade as 5 stars steak house with half the price, come with pan fried butter herbs potatoes, and mixed steamed veggies.”)

The thread about lack of good restaurants in Tahoe Park and our ongoing meme of “dead zones” — not to be confused with dead-to-me zones–reminded me of the dead zone that is the seeming former art deco theater building on Stockton and Broadway behind Subway, which just in the last few years has been home to 3 or 4 eating establishments that never saw the light of day. The current business hoping to reverse that trend is going to be called “Boon Boon.” I’ll let you read that name and think about it for a second. Ready? On the count of 10, what comes to mind?

Boom boom, right? Like, “I ate at that new Vietnamese restaurant on Broadway and twenty minutes later I had to make boom boom like rilly bad.”

However, in the interest of the Stockton corridor and good eateries for the greater Tahoe Park area I vow to try Boon Boon at least once. Assuming it does in fact not go the way of Po Boys, Quotes Bistro, and all the other failed restaurants that came before it…

The Bee reported today that the city will start awarding $500 to citizens who send in photographic evidence of illegal garbage dumping. It is a severe problem in neighborhoods like Oak Park, and one hopes the city’s plan will work. The guilty parties will be fined $500.

I’m really conflicted about this. There are very few organizations, local or otherwise, whose missions I respect more than Kevin Johnson’s St. HOPE. But the educational org’s newest project has me a little weirded out:

Imagine taking your child to a preschool that could scan each little brain, take blood samples, administer psychological tests or do genetic testing to help decide which teaching techniques best suit each youngster.

I don’t know, I mean it’s a little derivative…I think there was a newer episode of Twilight Zone like that… Oh wait, you’re not describing a horrifying dystopian future setting for a sci-fi movie, that’s an actual plan for a school.

Well today brings two big stories, one sad and one incredibly good. First the sad, it’s now official: Tower Records is gone. Like, for real. Liquidation sales start today. First Sacred Heart, then Tower, and since these things happen in threes, expect an announcement soon after November 7 about another Sacramento institution packing house…

The good news today is that the DEA has busted Daryl and Solomon Summerfield (hmm Solomon, eh? so these stories really are related…weird) a father and son drug outfit that was moving large amounts of cocaine around. If you just read this story in the Bee, one bit they left out, and that Ron Jones reports on CBS13, is that this operation was the coke supply for Oak Park. One thing Ron Jones doesn’t report is who “Scott McGregor” is, the person quoted in the article several times. I have a hunch that he might be talking about McGregor Scott, the US Attorney in Sacramento. What is that dude doing reversing his names like that! Making Ron Jones’ job harder is what. Anyway here’s to brighter days ahead for Oak Park…

As if there weren’t already a million cops there, Sacramento PD has announced a crackdown on speeders on Broadway. Motorists are warned to be extra vigilant while passing the Jamba Juice as chemically fortified juice is the new doughnut, don’t cha know. War on Speed ’05 is expected to last until next week or until some hot strippers show up at the Radisson again.

Via BeatNonStop, a blog by SacBee music guy Chris Macias (big ups to whom, by the way, are due for daring to pose for that picture), although really I heard this first from Heckasac (see, that’s called a “hyperlink,” you use it to alert Web site readers that you’re including a reference to another site on the Internet) Th’ Losin’ Streaks and formerly The Troublemakers lead singer Tim Foster had a burglary at his Oak Park pad and got a bunch of stuff stolen. Not a group to take tragedy lying down in a puddle of Red Stripe and bong water, the local Sacto music scene is staging a benefit concert!

Because if there’s one event out there right now that has victimized innocent peoples’ property, and put them at the mercy of our generosity, it’s the theft of vintage guitars from a Sacramento musician!

Sad story today about a beating murder in Oak Park the other day. Let’s just all agree that the residents of this storied old neighborhood deserve better.

That being the case, do you think Bee writer Cameron Jahn could have maybe found a different quote to describe the victim?

“He was sort of a sketchy guy, but at some level, he was kind of a cool person, like a ghetto archetype,” said Chris Ganson, who lives a few doors down.

‘Scuse me? I was thinking more along the lines of “he was a good man who did not deserve to be mercilessly beaten to death by a group of thugs.” How does that quote help me understand the story any better? Also I think the quote has a typo… in my dictionary that word starts with “stereo-” not “arche-” (thanks RonTopofIt).

The City has installed islands on the portion of Stockton Blvd. between Broadway and 14th Ave, which is right by Tahoe Park, the CoolDMZ clan’s whereabouts. And just yesterday they planted some small palm trees, which is super classy. Picture to follow when I get my act together about posting photos.

Now the prostitutes that troll along that stretch of Stockton Blvd. can imagine they are walking the sandy beaches of Tahiti!
