Sacramento radio throws in the towel

Although I really don’t know anyone that regularly listens to FM radio anymore, I did notice that the local station (93.7) that airs the “Howard Stern Show” recently switched formats in preparation for his December departure to satellite. Now I am not saying I listen to the Stern show, that’s like admitting you shop at Wal-Mart…sort of…I just happened upon this radio station while my iPod’s FM transmitter was syncing up, yeah, that’s what happened.

This new format you ask? Jack FM. Just one visit to their lame Web site will give you an idea of the cheese that is Jack. And this name thing for radio stations really bugs. It’s not new, I know, but come on, it’s a radio station. Here’s a good article about the switch (it’s to the sacbee! and it’s good! it CAN happen).

And while we may have no track record with Jack, Sacramento did roundly reject Bob, a similar format that The Flash (92.1) tried this spring before reverting to an all-’80s playlist.

Please, Satellite, take me away!

While you’re at the Jack-FM site (ok, you never really clicked that link, I know, so check it out because I asked you to. Here’s the link again), please to enjoy the URLs of the local Jack stations. Here are just a few:

http://www.iknowjack.com, http://www.jackbaby.com (vegas, shocker), http://www.jackontheweb.com, wwwilikejack.com

Ugh. Double ugh. Apparently I may be in the minority as this franchise is taking off across the land. With a recent agreement with ABC Radio, Jack is appealing to someone, somewhere. And Sacramento, you’re next.

Ooooh, Gordon Lightfoot….I love this song. “Sundown, you’d better take care…If I find you’ve been creeping ’round my back stairs”

  1. Jack Sucks. Who do they think they are going to attract with this crap? It’s they grabbed some dork’s Ipod and decided to put it on shuffle and call it a radio station.

You would never know it by listening to the crap we have to choose from on the radio, but Sacramento is considered one of the top 50 radio markets. Why can’t our market support any good radio stations willing to play good music instead of a bunch of mediocre radio stations fighting for the lowest common denominator?

I’m going to start listening to KYDS 91.5 exclusively. It’s a radio station out broadcast from my alma mater, El Camino Fundamental High School (we put the duh in fundamental).

If CSUS didn’t suck so much maybe they would let the students program on FM instead of banishing them to a crappy AM station that you can’t hear off campus unless you have one of those old fashioned radios that can tune in russia. Why do we need 2 FM stations for public radio anyway?

I guess I’ll have to get a sattelite radio reciever…

  2. KYDS is definitely one of the best local radio stations. And I can’t believe that until you said it just now I never realized there was no fm station from CSUS, unless you count capital public radio, which I don’t.

By far, though, the best local radio programming is “Jake’s All Request Beatles Show” on KVMR outta Nevada City. I want to do a big Sac Rag interview with Jake before he starts high school and gets too cool for the Fab Four.

  3. And if you, like me, say to yourself, “Gee, that ‘jazz’ radio station we have never plays any music…and when they do, it usually sucks,” go to http://www.kcsm.org and tune in. It’s the best jazz station in the country, and broadcast out of the vaunted a/v superpower College of San Mateo.
