According to my morning paper, Paul Joncich and Jennifer Whitney are being replaced as anchors of the evening news on CBS 13. The only confirmed new face is Sam Shane, who is pictured on that link in a location that makes it seem like he is the writer, Sam McManis. Funny.
The other replacement hasn’t been named and it looks like KOVR wants to downplay the role of anchor #2. So Sam is the man for now. I wonder if it’ll be a reporter from another station? That could be a good play.

I just wanted to say that CBS 13 has lost two long time viewers. I met Jennifer Whitney the same year she made the move to Sac. I went to her Fresno Station to see a live news show in action. I was an anchor on my high school news program my junior and senior year.
Jennifer stepped away from the desk to go to her office at one point and her co-anchor let all of the students in the room that she had just received word earlier that week that she got the “job” in Sacramento.
I was thrilled to start watching her and over the years have seem her co-anchors come and go. Jennifer had the presence of a more “higher-network” anchors and CBS 13 will keep going down hill in the ratings without her, since she is the only reason many people watched in the first place.
The new anchors seem like out-of-state anchors, I believe the new female is from out of state and it shows, even if she doesn’t mention it every two seconds.
The new set is horrible, I mean I still see BLUE when I turn the channel. I feel like I’m watching a “Hollywood Tabloid” show. 20/20 and Primetime Live aren’t so “shiny”.
Anyway, just had to give my two cents.

thanks for the update, Trav. (can I call you Trav?) i still haven’t caught the new and improved CBS13 except for the last few seconds of Thursday’s broadcast (the lead-in to Survivor on my Tivo) and it was Sam Shane standing in the studio, away from the desk, shot from some oblique angle. i even want to say he was bouncing a balloon at the camera.

I will also find my news somewhere else. The new blue set hurts my eyes and I am unable to concentrate on what they are saying. The only way I would ever watch the blue eyesore is if they brought back Paul and Jen. The only thing CBS had going for it was them.

We could’nt figure out what was going on at Channel 13, all of a sudden the people that we were used to seeing were gone, we figured they would be back, maybe sick, on vacation or somthing temporary, but now that I know you can bet I won’t be watching channel 13 and niether will a lot of my friends and familly, the group you have now sucks.

I am very unhappy with the changes on KOVR 13 news. I really enjoyed Jennifer and Paul, and cannot stand the all blue set. Big mistake =( After more than 20 yrs of watching KOVR 13 news, I will now be watching a competitor.

I have to say that I too miss Paul and Jennifer, but I don’t know if bringing them back would be enough. Channel 13 the last 6 or so months has really gone downhill- the local coverage is about the same but the quality and slant of the national feeds stinks. The new set is okay, and unlike other posters’ comments I don’t mind the blue. That said, the new eye-candy only goes so far,…I wish the new faces, Sam and Dave well, but it’s no longer my channel of choice or even close.

I had just recently started watching CBS 13 News about 7 months ago. I watched it because of the chemistry between Paul and Jennifer. They appeared to really enjoy doing the news together and they often made me laugh. Then all of a sudden they were gone. That’s not right at all. CBS 13 made a big mistake firing them. BRING THEM BACK!!! They were the best anchor team in Sacramento. Now I’m back to watching whatever news is on the channel I happen to be watching at that time. If it’s CBS 13 I change the channel. BTW, the blue set must go!!!

When the public goes looking for their favorite news anchors on the internet, the obvious screams the team is sorely missed. The blue set sucks and who is the blonde from out of town? She and the grey haired guy seem terribly out of place here in Sac Town. Someone should be fired at CBS 13. I’m turning the channel with the rest of my crew.

I can’t stand the new “zoomie” camera movements they have. I can understand that they want to make the news less static and involve movement but I hate the “Start on the floor and fly up towards their faces” shot every time they switch cameras.
I feel like I’m in a biplane and they are beautiful King Kongs…..
13 lost me when Dewey left. He was my man and he is sorely missed.

I too am disappointed with the change. I met Paul Joncich once a few years back and after having a brief conversation with him I decided to watch his newscast (I was a WB58 viewer) and became devoted. I find myself now in search of a new news provider and am more than a bit disappointed in my options. I may just start going to bed early and get my news online in the morning!
Please say it was all a bad mistake and push the “undo” button.

I haven’t watched CBS13 10:00 News since Paul and Jen left. I have switched to Fox40 news. Paul and Jen were professional and had good chemistry. The two cardboard personalities they have now should go and fast. BRING BACK PAUL & JEN!!! (I will come back if you do)!

I too am disappointed Jennifer Whitney left 😦 I watched her in Fresno when she was paired with John Wallace. I met her after she had just taken the job with KOVR 13 at the Arden Mall. She was very nice, well dressed and quite attractive !She talked to me for a few minutes and is a class act !! I believe her replacement was an excellent choice and she also came from Fresno. We really need to give her a chance. Good luck to you Jen !! You are missed very much…already.

I think many viewers are naive and must realize that anchor replacements happen all the time. Paul and Jen no longer had the chemistry. This was not Jen’s fault as she needed a more solid partner. I appreciate the fact that CBS 13 is trying differnt sets/anchors, etc. Also, the new anchor from Fresno is very pleasing to look at and talented. A keeper for sure. Sam Shane is the same quality as Walt Gray….shouldn’t be more that a weather or a sportscaster. I will still watch and give it time.

What exactly happened to Paul and Jen? I used to watch them all the time when I used to live in Tracy. But then I moved to San Francisco to go to school out there. I’m on spring break right now, so I’m here in Tracy, and flipped the channel to watch the news and see that the set looks very awkward, and to see these new anchors. Bah. Everything just looks out of place.
All that blue in the background, and the use of TVs next to the anchors just looks terrible. Like a user said previously, it looks like I’m watching one of those Hollywood tabloid shows now…
Looks like I’m back to News10. Those two anchors have been the same for as long as I can remember. I also enjoy News10, but it looks like KOVR13 or, “CBS13” is totally out of the picture now..

I thought I’d give the new team a fair shake before commenting. I’ve done that now and have switched my allegiance to Fox News on channel 18. It’s not that the new team is bad, it’s the whole change in appearance that leaves a lot to be desired. It’s glitzy, staged, cold and just loses the appeal of a local station. Bender acts like he put one too many lumps of sugar in his coffee. I suspect that he feels a need to change his act or he’ll be the next to receive a pink slip. Just do the weather Dave, leave the stand up comedy to the comedians. Jen is missed greatly. Paul not so much.
They were not right for each other from day one. Paul(Wally Cleaver)Joncich appears better suited to a sitcom. Too bad Jen paid the price for a miscast in him.

I recently moved to Southern CA, and decided one day to see how my favorite anchors Paul and Jennifer were doing. Imagine my surprise when I visited the KOVR site, only to find that Paul and Jennifer were no longer there. I saw a few clips of video through the website, and the new set and anchors are aweful. Paul and Jen are definetly too good for the “new” station. I hope “CBS 13” or whatever cheezy name they gave it sees how much they were loved, and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one to feel this way. Keep watching something else!

My husband and I have watched channel 13 for years. We miss Paul and Jennifer, the news is not the same and we no longer watch channel 13. We miss there warm and personalities, it was such a disappointment when they were taken so suddenly with no explantion.

Last night’s news broadcast on KOVR-13 was just about the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen. I think there are high school productions that are more professional. I think there was a minimum of five different videos that did not match up to the stories. One apology after another for all the buffoonery. I sure miss Paul and Jen. It’s obvious they were not the only people replaced. The behind the scenes people are just as bad as those in front of the cameras. Last night was just painful.

I really think the new anchors Sam and Pallus have no chemistry at all. Sam appears to act like a zombie, while pallas is cold shouldered to the viewers.
I never liked to watch Dave Bender because I think he’s too un professional. In other words, acts too much like a hillbilly. Iused to watch Kovr-13 news but now, I don’t! Reason: too cold, not like watching an old friend doing the newa.

I had the terrible misfortune of meeting Paul Joncich last week as he is selling his home. He bit my head off when I conversed with him (and no I didn’t tell him I knew who he was, he seemed pompous enough without me letting him know I recognized him).
What a disappointment he was. Guess he doesn’t have any reason to portray a glowing personality anymore. Good riddance.

I cant believe Marcey Valenzuela left : ( In was used to watch her on the weekends when she did her reports from the news desk. It totally sucks. It is said to see familiar faces leave. espically Elissa Lynn who was the cheif meteorologist over at News10. Sadly Patti Lee left because of personal reasons from what i read online, and Stephanie Nisokowia who was a long time report at KOVR left because of her new business in the Country Club center. Almost every one at CBS13 left. But i do think the set is a bit better than the previous one. It was boring and it didnt draw me closing to the news after what over 12 years using that set? When i firsted tuned into CBS13 on February i thought i was watching a news broadcast from the bay area, because they news anchors looked way new and the new set looked like it would be from a big city. But i guess all good things must come to an end eh?

I think they need to bring Jennifer back not only as an anchor, but let her also produce the show. Obviously someone is making some bad decisions for channel 13 and with her experience she might be able to boost their rateings to where they need to be. I have heard nothing but positive comments about Jennifer and if channel 13 is smart, they will bring her back.

I want to comment that after watching Channel 10 news for years, I had switched over to Channel 13 news about 5 years ago because of the professionalism of Jennifer and Paul. I became a loyal fan of theirs. They were both very pleasant and professional.

Not only does KOVR 13 suck now, but they are bringing their “sister” station Channel 31 down too. They both seem to be hireing real bimbos to do stupid “news” segments and Chris Burrows acts like a dorky highschool kid. I have refused to watch Ch. 13 since they changed and I don’t like CW 31 anymmore either. And I have watched them since they first hit the air here in Sac. I don’t like the two sations being one…I mean if they are going to share newsman and reporters..what is the point! Bad news for the News in this city!
