F65: Lookin’ local

Every time I drive past F65, the aptly titled commercial project at the corner of Folsom & 65th, it grows on me a little more. It’s not the Starbucks and the Dos Coyotes, two businesses I can live without, it’s that the corner is anchored by an offbeat trio: Strings Italian Cafe, Pita Pit, and most importantly local favorite Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop. Say what you will about any of these, these are not your average minimall fare. Plus, the fallen statue head is totally Clash of the Titans, and now that I’ve put that out in the open, F65 owes me a cut of the profits for the sudden spike in 28-40 year old males who will now suddenly want to shop there.

  1. Man, every time my wife and I drive pass the mr pickle’s sandwich shop on fair oaks blvd, I say to her, “Let’s eat there some time,” and she always replies, “Yeah, right!” as if eating at a shop with a pickle-man mascot is totally inconceivable, but now I have some evidence that my hunch about the tastiness of mr pickles is correct. I can say something like, “Honey, I don’t know you’re turning your nose up at mr. pickle’s, the Sac Rag gave it a thumbs up!”

  2. We ate at Strings on Saturday. We were just excited to be on a date so we had a great time. But I do not think it would live up to Sac-Eats’ standards. The waiters had a lot of kinks to work out in their service approach but that seems fair for a new restaurant. The food was just okay. The dessert was super yummy. I think in the future I would just go there for dessert and coffee, the most important parts of a meal. The price was reasonable for a nice night out but I think for the cost we could have done better at a number of other Sacramento restaurants. Still, we wanted to patronize F65 to see what all the hype is about, so our mission was accomplished.

  3. The Office Depot in the F65 complex has great customer service (and they open at 7am on work days = bonus!) Everyone there is very friendly and asks if you need help finding anything, but they’re not overly aggressive or intrusive like the staff at Total Beauty Experience (Arden near Morse) who are vulture-like in their approach.

  4. Mr. Pickles fans beware! The Mr. Pickles on Fair Oaks near El Camino is an independent eatery and I can vouch for it’s tastiness (L’Michelle is awesome). The rest of the Mr. Pickles locations are franchise owned and not quite as tasty.

I thought “Planet of the Apes” was the pop reference of the year. But I just like monkeys.

  5. the discussion of the gherkin costumed mascot reminded me of my current favorite mascot: the Red Tag guy on the John L. Sullivan commercials. he’s got moxie.

  6. Dos Coyotes. Jamba Juice. Strings. That reminds me of the Davis Marketplace. If only they would install some sort of prominent white sculpture that vaguely resembled an Egghead I’d feel like I was preparing for another night of power drinking at the Grad and quietly sneaking out of some chick’s apartment at four in morning.
