Elk Grove co-op floundering

According to Bob Shallit, the new Natural Foods Co-op in Elk Grove is not faring well.

…[T]he only signage that people can see from the parking lot – the words “food, inspiration and community” – is confusing.

“Some people think we’re a church,” says GM Paul Cultrera.

But the folks in charge are confident that “things will improve as a result of signage changes, increased advertising and visits by co-op staffers (some dressed as giant veggies) to schools, churches and neighborhood associations.” Not sure how that’s gonna go over with those “co-op is a cult” people, but good luck, hippies.

  1. Moldy food might be the reason why business isn’t so bright for the Elk Grove branch of the co-op. Read on:

(BTW, HeyMeg and I must be on the same procrastinators’ wavelength today with our personal narrative comments.)

My old office was next door to the original co-op on Alhambra, so I spent plenty of time and money there for 5+ years. Not only was there a clerk named “Blue Jay,” there was also a female manager named “Andrew.” The co-op frequently held staff meetings in our conference room, and the rest of our office building would smell like patchouli for the rest of the day. Regardless of my preppyness, I’ve always enjoyed a peaceful, karmic relationship with the co-op.

A few months ago when work took me to the greater 99/Bond Road area, I stopped into the new Elk Grove Coop and found it trying too hard to be Whole Foods only without as much variety. When I spotted my favorite coop food item, the locally made pizza bagels (which one of my friends calls “scab bagels” because “that’s what they look like,” he says), I was mortified to see that they had MOLD on them. Several packages of their items (not just the scab bagels) had mold. When I pointed the mold out to an employee, he just said, “Oh.” The lack of an apology or even an “ew gross!” made me vow to never return.
