Bee takes on predators

I’m sure the Sacramento Bee’s three-part series this week on sexual violent predators is top-notch jouralism. I think it’s full of eye-opening details, in-depth reporting and Pulitzer Prize-worthy material. It seems like a momentous achievement, an invaluable look at a problem most of us try not to think about. Of course, since every third word is “rape” and every 4th paragraph is about child molestation, I’m trying hard but I can’t get through it.

  1. You’re in trouble then, DMZ. The next feature series the Bee is looking to tackle is “Sexual Assualt in our Coma Wards.” I hear the word “Vaseline” is used about 50 times per article.

  2. If a child is molested, just because no one else is around doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The human condition is often painful, but I thought that journalists tried to lessen the pain of the human condition by telling the story, alerting others to problems, and gaining community support for victims & to punish wrongdoers?

Of course you could make it a much more palatable story if you just cut & paste into Word and search & replace “raped” with “tickled” and “molested” with “gave candy”. Seems wrong somehow.

  3. i guess my rhetorical bit wasn’t as witty in html as it was in my head:

    “*I’m sure* it’s top-notch journalism… *I think* it’s Pulitzer material… *it seems* like a momentous achievement…”

From what I skimmed I really think a Pulitzer nod is in the future for these writers…

  4. How bout a Pulitzer nod for the writing crew of Arrested Development? I know there’s no Pulitzer for TV writing, but they should give a special on-time award for that brilliant and undervalued writing group.

  5. The “Pineros” series seems to be a Pulitzer attempt, too.

Both are certainly important, worthy issues. Too bad they make such tedious reading (at least for those of us with limited attention span and limited intellect (which, by definition of IQ, is half of us))….
