Takin’ it to the streets

News10.net reports that Sacramento police will have zero tolerance for out-of-control street partying during Mardi Gras festivities in Old Sacramento this year.

Last year police in riot gear had to break up large street crowds in the historic section the weekend before the pseudo-holiday. Approximately 700 party-goers converged on the area for an event that never materialized. Instead, there were fights and vehicles were vandalized.

No wonder they were hostile, how embarrassing. If only the Sac Rag was around back then to warn the public.

This year the celebrations fall on the weekend of February 25-26 (Those of you that heeded my recommendation would already know this.)

“We are not going to tolerate people who are going to be drinking in excess. We are not going to tolerate people who are going to be involved in illegal street racing or involved in any type of crime,” said police Sgt. Terrell Marshall.

Oh man, this must mean watered down, overpriced drinks with early last calls, huh? Bummer. Oh well, it’s for the best.

For example, Mardi Gras events, such as special drink promotions, will stay within bars and clubs. There will be no overflow into the streets…

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Special drink promotions? Stay within bars and clubs? Does this mean merchants want to offer up dollar shots to hundreds of patrons without allowing them to leave their premises until they sober up so as not to cause a disturbance as they stumble to their cars? Granted, it’s been a long time since I’ve loved the nightlife, but were special drink promotions ever offered outside of bars and clubs?

At any rate, it is the “last hurrah” before Lent.

  1. Street racing? In Old Sacramento? During a crowded holiday? With cars?

Okaaaaaay, I would have to say that this is unlikely… Is this comment based upon any past incidences of street racing or is the officer being interviewed somehow randomly associating between “street racing” and “drunk tourists” ?

  2. So what you’re saying is, I can’t walk from Fanny Ann’s to Popeye’s (am I really that old?) with my GoGirl and vodka on Saturday the 25th? Crap, might as well cancel the sitter!

  3. No, bdub, you’re not old by referencing Popeye’s. (You’d really be dating yourself if you said you miss Lord Beaverbrooks.) There was a guy in my traffic school class in ’92 who said he was the DJ at Popeye’s, and the instructor asked, “They have a DJ at that chicken place?” For the younger folk, Popeye’s was a very fun, very cheesy Old Sac bar/club that became Tabloid 95 and is now Tunel 21. We used to go there with great regularity ca. ’92-’94, and the one night we passed it up following a Depeche Mode show at Arco, we found out that Dave Gahan and Martin Gore were partying it up at Popeye’s later that night. I still kick myself to this day.
