Tower, Copeland’s bargain shopping

I have yet to follow the arrow guys to Tower Records or the Copeland’s at the downtown plaza to see what sort of outrageous deals I can find. I am in need of some running shoes and in need of spending as close as possible to $0 on them. I’m thinking the week after Thanksgiving the Copeland’s discounts will creep into the 80% range but I’m also thinking that shoes that can give me the support and stability I need will be in short supply in my demanding price range. Also I would like to pick up some CDs and books on the cheap. Anybody out there been to either of these stores lately and willing to report on the bargain shopping environment? Tower seems to have dropped percentages off their signs so I can’t tell how far the scale has slipped on that.

(On a side note I just realized that there should be a rating system for us bargain shoppers, akin to the clapping popcorn guy. Would it just be a scale composed of cheap skate graphics?)

  1. Tower was down to 30% off CD’s, but they were offering an additional 10% off of that over the weekend. I’m guessing that they’ll be down to 50% by the week after Thanksgiving.

  2. I thought this was the classic case of how a sacrag author poses an issue, and a reader offers a solution (including a locally-owned business, no less.) Someone’s gotta be concerned about DMZ’s need for a stability shoe. As Peja says, “Everyone deserves good feet!”

  3. Clearly you missed the, “I am in need of some running shoes and in need of spending as close as possible to $0 on them.” part.

  4. in my high-rolling days i submitted myself to the full foot workup at Fleet Feet and paid non-discount price for the ones that they recommended (New Balance 587s) and then later replaced those with a similar pair (878s) from Road Runner. these are really un-sexy shoes so i’m hoping they might be among the last pickings at a clearance sale like this.

  5. I went to the Copeland’s on Fair Oaks and Marconi two weeks ago, and the pickings were getting slim. The prices were then 50% off the already reduced price. My major purchase was a pair of black Converse for $15, but I didn’t see anything suitable for running. The clothes they had were, as I describe, “workout clothes for people who don’t really work out.” There was nothing that would last a jaunt up Devil’s Thumb without falling apart or chafing me beyond recognition.

DMZ, if you’re looking for stability in a running shoe, hoof it over to Fleet Feet (I recommend the 2311 J Street location) and get a proper gait analysis — it only takes a few minutes, but it’s worth it. While you may spend more initially on a pair of shoes, it will save you exponentially in the long run when you don’t have thrashed joints from wearing the wrong shoes. While you’re at Fleet Feet on J, be sure to pick up something for the special lady in your life at their new women’s clothing shop next door.
