Tears and Anguish: Restaurant Closings

Here’s a quick recap of restaurant closings cum real estate opportunities in the area.Closed...for good.

East West Steak & Sushi Buffet- El Camino Ave
As mentioned previously this frightening gastronomic nightmare is no more, opening up more than 8000 sq ft of restaurant space. Maybe we should reopen a Shakey’s there?

IHOP-El Camino Ave
It appears that the IHOP at Watt and El Camino has gone from “Under Renovation” to “Scary and Derelict.” Feel free to contact the national HQ of IHOP to let them know that this building falls far short from fresh ‘n’ fruity.

Angel’s Fresh Mex- 16th St
My tears threaten to short out my keyboard as I write these words. Angel’s is closed. Those tortilla wrapped bundles of goodness that I have come to count on for weekly sustenance are gone. My heart is breaking like their soft, supple tortillas never did. We will miss ye, Angel’s.

Shakey Jake’s– 15th and R
The British Navy finally caught up with local pirate Jake and tore down his dream of having the smallest coffee and sandwich shop in Sac. RIP Shakey Jakes.

Oni’s The Original House of Chicken & Waffles- Howe and Arden
I had heard they served the bes mac ‘n’ cheese in town. I guess I’ll never know. I heard that their mac ‘n’ cheese tasted like ass.

Got any updates of your own? Please share.

  1. Oni’s Chicken and Waffles is not closed nor is it located on Howe and Arden. Oni’s Chicken & Waffles is very much open and located at 5015 Stockton Bl. across from KMART.

  2. Oops. Sorry about that. Correction made. It was “The Original House of Chicken & Waffles” on Howe Ave that closed. Thank God! Now I can still try that mac ‘n’ cheese.

    Thanks for reading.

  3. I still don’t understand why I have never tried chicken and waffles. Fried chicken? check. Waffle? yes please. Syrup on both? what do you think.

The only thing better would be “video game flavored beer.”

  4. Actually the best is when the syrup from the waffles and the hot sauce on your chicken come together. It’s like a chocolate and peanut butter moment.

  5. Two pieces of gossip and info about the Angel’s closing.
    1. They were forced to close after being threatened with a lawsuit when a patron fell off of a chair on their patio. If said patron ever shows his/her face around here, he/she might get a sombrero full of soul-crushing verbal degradation of the type usually saved for third world despots and irresponsible restaurateurs.
    2. Work has already begun on reopening as a new Mexican eatery called “La Garrancha” (spelling dubious).

  6. La garrancha — a crude sword, spike or hook. Basically, something with which to poke.

I’m guessing it is someone’s surname. If not, when it opens, I’m only gonna call it “the shiv”

Any word on Luis Jr.’s re-location?

I will have to try this Garnacha you speak of when it opens.

  8. The Bee reports today that Restaurant 55 Degrees will be closing. Sad, as this place is awesome. Another example of high end restaurants failing in a crappy economy.

I predict that Luis Jr. re-opens in a spot befitting the quality of the food – the 4th circle of hell is reserved for restaurateurs who serve bland food.

  9. The Bee is also reporting that two of the Fins Markets closed last week. I never really warmed up to it myself but it’s depressing that these places aren’t lasting.

  10. Here’s something interesting. Unless Garnacha (what used to be Angel’s) is lying with their sign, they plan to stay open 24 HOURS A DAY. That would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
