Where’s the Big Fun?

I haven’t been to The State Fair yet, but I think my two girls will go crazy for the livestock stuff so I think we’re going to make it this year, eventually. I have to ask, however: is it just me or does attendance seem way down? Where is the traffic snarl backing up from Expo to the WX? Over the weekend I was able to drive in to the Arden Fair parking lot and grab a sweet spot outside Nordys and get out with no delay. Last night we drove past the fairgrounds at 6:30, prime fair dining time, and the lot seemed about half full.

I know my evidence is entirely anecdotal, but those are 3 major indicators that the Fair is in town and they are non-factors thus far. What gives? Discuss.

I don’t think the shooting on the first night of the fair helped attendance much.

Nor probably did the fact that the shooting didn’t involve Rick Springfield.

Attendance is definately down. I come up Biz-80 every day, and the lots aren’t even close to full. Unless they are parking cars elsewhere this year, the people just aren’t turning out.

I found the fair was pretty stale this year. It’s the same deep fried crap and boring rides year after year.

I agree with John Todd. The fair was *exactly* the same as in previous years. When we attended last weekend, it felt like I’d only left the place a few days before. It did feel like the crowd was smaller during the day, but attendance was quite brisk in the evening.

I don’t know… Isn’t the year-to-year sameness kind of a crucial element of the fair? It harkens back to a simpler time…blue-ribbon hogs, corn on the cob, hay rides, animatronic gold prospectors, etc.

By the way if you crave that throwback action, the Nevada County Fair is totally awesome.

There are WAY more cars for sale than in years past: You can’t swing a newborn pig now without hitting a freshly Armor-alled tire. And, little-known fact– this year’s newborn animals are the first batch of UCD’s “genetic modification” program: All the new pigglets taste like soft-serve ice cream. And the “squash” now tastes like chicken.

But funnel cakes are and always will be funnel cakes. They are just imported from Pakistan now.

Please wait for the last Monday of the fair before saying its all the same: Shootings on the last Monday have become a tradition. Isn’t that some group’s “multi-cultural” way of celebrating “diversity”? We’ll see I guess, but I wouldn’t want to get in the way of tradition.
