State Fair Opens Friday

Posted August 11, 2008 at 4:32 PM by Stickie in Big Fun (12 comments)

poppyIf there is one thing you can count on, it is the presence of your old pal Stickie at the California State Fair. I’ll try to keep you updated about cool stuff, but I urge you to check the daily schedule at their website to keep abreast of the hundreds of events.

Wednesday at midnight is the last day to buy discount tickets, including the $36 adult season pass. This weekend features Smashmouth (who have apparently moved to Stockton and have quietly been playing with local acts when not on tour), The Doodlebops (who I find to be a creepy Canadian offspring of The Wiggles and GWAR, but kids seem to dig them) and the fantastic Weird Al, who very amusingly got blamed by local morons for attracting some unsavory elements to last year’s closing weekend because he is a rapper.

Any zydeco bands this year? I hear they attract an unsavory, boater-wearing element.

Dude, that White and Nerdy song just whips those engineering grads into such a frenzy it’s amazing they even invivted Weird Al back this year.

I was there when the almost-riots happened and I’m pretty sure most of those folks weren’t there to see Weird Al. A lot of them looked too young to know who Weird Al is.

I wonder what kind of fried foods the big fried food stand will have (the one who makes the fried coke and krispy creme chicken sandwich)…they told me last year they were going to have some giant LCD screens and stuff for this year.

Eats: Thanks for the tip on the Engineering Grads, now I can get the company to pay my admission as a recruiting event!

Is the Fair all outta’ love? Either the Fair organizers eliminated, or they decided to play down, the “Killebrate Your Kulture” day. Too bad- That was always such an uplifting experiance, making me really proud of my kulture on an annual basis. I guess I’ll just go represent during the Air Supply concert and see what develops.

I am confident that SacEats will include a fried-food update in his annual pilgrimage to the BBQ beef sandwich stand.

Oh, as far as the unsavory elements — They attend every year; They are called teenagers. One of my 478 pet peeves about Sacramento is that some people see a group of teenagers in public and immediately try to figure out if they are crips or bloods before grabbing their children and running the other way. I prefer to watch teenagers and laugh.

Newsflash - sometimes, teenagers act really stupid.

Those last two zydeco comments were somewhat in context. You’ve got no beef there.
