Ice Skating Downtown

The downtown outside skating rink is opening tomorrow. Each day on my walk to the light rail I’ve seen them building the rink and yesterday the fire trucks were there filling it. As an adult I think the ice skating could be pretty lame – it’s a small rink, and its $6 for two hours. Skate rental for $2. But I am thinking this would be an awesome thing if I was like, 8. So families check it out and report. There’s a Starbucks next door for the hot chocolate needs of those thermos-less types. Website is: http://www.westfield.com/downtownplaza/promo/index05.html Me no understand how to make the hyper-linky thing. You’ll have to cut & paste! Me also not understand how to attach a picture, which too bad because it would have made this posting a whole lot cuter.

  1. Good to know. Plus, watching the little kiddies skate is free, and they’re going to be sooooo adorable!

  2. With Pyramid Alehouse just up the block, the ice rink could be made a bit more entertaining for parents or childless adults wishing to recapture their youth (if only for three laps, which is about how much my friends and I skated a couple years ago when we went.) There are often discount coupons in local newspapers or special offers on certain nights, so keep your eye out for those.

  3. The last time we went, there was an aspiring Brian Boitano, a boy of maybe about 14-15 years old. He had some fierce moves and the jazziest jazz hands in the west. He was oblivious to the bevy of pre-teen girls falling over each other to get his attention.

That was well worth the $6 admission fee and enduring the grossness of rental skates. A tip for my OCD brethren: bring antibacterial wipes/gel and a pair of socks you don’t mind tossing out after wearing the skates.

A Starbucks alternative near the rink is Chicory, located at 11th & K, owned by the family of a longtime friend of sac-eats.

  4. Mistake in the previous post: Chicory is at 11th & L, not K, near Chops and Tootsies & directly across from “The Building.”

  5. Haymeg, can you please tell me the times for this Saterday. I would like to take my four children. Can you also tell me the ages for free skate, and if they have rails for them. Thanks so much!
