Head for the hills!

The Sac Bee has an interesting article today on projections by the City and County of Sacramento of potential floods that might occur given different scenarios of failing levees. This article comes complete with maps of how deep you can expect the flood waters to reach in your area, as well as evacuation routes.

Of particular interest was this bit in the article:

Generally, you will not need to drive for hours to be safe if a levee fails. You only need to get to high ground. Good areas to aim for: Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Folsom, Davis and cities along the I-80 corridor such as Rocklin and Auburn. In general, going north on I-5 or Highway 99 is not advised because of low spots. Heading south on Highway 99 is also iffy because it can flood.

So basically, if you live south of Highway 50, you’re screwed.

  1. Sacramento can expect a sales-tax increase in the next election to help improve the worst levee system in the United States. …And people wonder why we have such low numbers of people re-locating from New Orleans. Before the breach, they had BETTER levees than we do now.

  2. We could use a flood to wash the massive piles of bird crap away in downtown. What is it with this town? I’m walking around downtown aimlessly, as I often do, screaming at the voices coming from the grates in the sidewalks, when I notice that the sidewalks are UTTERLY filthy with bird crap. Is it this time of year? Shouldn’t we have some kind of spraying program to combat the bird poo problem I keep hearing about? Does this mean the bird poo epidemic has finally hit Sacramento? WHat the hell do we have prisioners in the jail for if not to scrub the damn filthy sidewalks?
