Don’t let this happen to you!

I’m on the SacPD e-mail list for crime alerts, and here’s what greeted me this morning. Our readers are too wise to fall for this, but it’s too rich to not pass along:

On 1/18/05 at approximately 1530 hrs., the victim was at Church’s Chicken (2980 Florin Rd) and was approached by Suspect #1. He was on the phone and told the victim that he was talking to his attorney. He then had the victim speak to the person on the phone who told the victim that his client was lost and asked if he could give Suspect #1 a ride somewhere to be picked up. The victim agreed to do so.

Suspect #1 showed the victim what appeared to be two large rolls of money. Suspect #1 went on to explain that the money was an inheritance and that he was supposed to donate it to an African church. The victim didn’t know of any African churches, but offered to take Suspect #1 to his (St. Charles Church 7584 Center Pkwy). Suspect #1 agreed and got on the phone with the alleged attorney. They got to the church and waited in the parking lot. They were approached by Suspect #2 who engaged Suspect #1 in conversation. Suspect #1 asked Suspect #2 and the victim to help distribute the money and asked them to show that they were well off enough so that he would know they would not run off with his money.

They all went to the Farmers/Merchant Bank at Franklin/Florin where Suspect #2 came back with what was supposed to be a large amount of money. Suspect #1 rolled the money up in a handkerchief and they all prayed over it. Suspect #1 asked the victim if he could also get some good faith money. They all went to the victim’s bank (Golden 1 1340 Florin Rd) where the victim withdrew $10,000. Suspect #1 rolled up the money in the handkerchief and they all prayed for it again. This is where the switch occurred.

Suspect #2 said that his girlfriend could give Suspect #1 a ride to the airport and they both exited the victim’s vehicle and walked off toward the Round Table. Shortly after, the victim figured out that something was wrong and found that the money was actually cut up paper.

  2. Easy rule to remember:
If you find yourself taking money out of an ATM for people that you didn’t know that morning when you woke up, STOP! Then go eat a cheesesteak. It always works for me.

  3. Damn, I never have 10,000 in my bank account. Why did someone dumb enough to fall for this crap have that much money in the first place. I tell ya, it makes me want to go into the crime game. If you let your money go that easy, you obviously don’t need it as badly as I do.

  4. sounds like an elderly person, especially with the praying bit. I think the gig is up though. Too greedy on this job. Won’t be long before they nail them. Hope they practice this trick using smokes. They’ll need it in prison.
