As most of us know, President George Bush will be making an appearance in West Sacramento on Saturday for an Earth Day event. Arnold Governegger is using Bush’s swing through the state as an opportunity to plead his case for federal assistance regarding our levees to the unyielding feds:
“The situation could not be more serious,” Schwarzenegger said. “Right now we are one big storm or one earthquake away from a major disaster just like Katrina, everyone seems to understand that but the federal government.”
Let’s be fair to the feds, Arnold. As we know, the federal government will only understand the potential for disaster after the disaster happens. Until then, no one will have predicted the failure of our levees too, right?
On a related note, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez does not appear to be entertained by the Arnold vs. George megamatch main event:
“It’s not good enough for us that our Governor is pounding on the Bush administration. We need to see real results. We want to see money coming back into California.”
It’s always more fun when money’s on the line.
What’s in it for Bush and any future Republican administration? Not much. Flooding in Sacramento isn’t exactly going to raise the hackles of red voters in Omaha. Heck, it probably won’t raise the hackles of red voters in Placer County unless they have to drive through Sac to get somewhere. Even then, they’ll probably grumble “servesemright.”
Look at the outrage around New Orleans. Unless you live there, it seems to have dissipated. And if you do live there, your outrage can be channeled toward the Mayor’s election. Certainly the concern over the abject poverty in NO seems to have abated. As we say in the policy biz, that window has closed.
If we get any substantial funds for levee repair, something beyond a token amount just so Bush can look compassionately conservative, I’ll be very, very surprised.
And right now the only flood that interests congress is the so-called flood of illegals.

I don’t want to put words in your mouth, John, but I think you just intimated that California should secede. And I’m right there with you, buddy. Neither Dem nor Rep in DC has any incentive to help CA becasue we’re always going to vote Blue and no amount of money will change that. That is unless Mondale runs again. You just have to vote against that tool.
