Proper Hydration

As the mercury rises, it’s important to ward off heatstroke, and apparently the staff at Danielle’s Creperie have taken note of this.

A coworker and I just returned from a lunch meeting there and had no fewer than three employees topping off our water and iced tea with virtually every sip we took. Danielle’s, located at the busy Arden Town Center at Fair Oaks and Watt, runs a tight ship for their busy lunchtime crowd. Tables are turned quickly; however, the diner is never made to feel rushed. The food is always of top quality — I recommend the smoked salmon salad and splitting the raspberry chocolate crepe with your guest for dessert. (Danielle’s is also in the Entertainment Book.)

Seriously though, can we cool it with the refills*? Or, at least don’t ask each time if you can top off our drinks and just do it? I don’t want to discourage excellent customer service, but being interrupted every three minutes with a “Can I top off your drink?” gets a little annoying, especially if the server tries to be fancy and refill the water and iced tea at the same time, but then invariably overfills one and spills all over the table and the spreadsheet you’re discussing.

Mr. NonRunner and I experienced this same phenomena at Fro’s a couple months ago where the young girl would stand there with her pitcher and wait for a break in our conversation to ask us if we’d like more water. Again, I’m not advocating being the type to ignore food service staff at restaurants, as good wait staff can truly add a lot to your overall dining experience, I just don’t think we need to be as intrusive with the water refills.

My recommendation? Wait until the glass is half-empty and just swoop in and top it off — even better, have a pitcher of cold water with no ice in it, so you’re just adding water to the glass of ice, and not refilling a glass of ice with even more ice and very little water so you just end up refilling the same 2oz of water every couple minutes.

I realize there are much bigger problems facing our region, and the entire world for that matter, but this is just the little snippet that’s bugging me today — I’m blaming it on tapering off my Prednisone.

*Except, of course for their all-you-can-drink wine nights on Wednesdays — then please feel free to refill as expeditiously as possible.
