PAT VOGELI: A cure for housing woes?

The slew of articles and rumors on a declining housing market had my husband and I pretty uptight when it came time to sell our house for something slightly larger. We worried that whatever profit the market did provide could be devoured by realtor’s fees and repair costs, so we weren’t even sure if we should hire a realtor. It didn’t ease our confusion any when one realtor told us flat out that the market was dead (not exactly inspiring our confidence) and another submitted a proposed selling price that was so inflated and greedy even we could tell it would leave us sitting on the market forever. Luckily, we met realtor Pat Vogeli while helping a friend shop for houses. Simply put, Pat was AWESOME.

Those having trouble with the house-selling process would do quite well to call him. He’s been working in Sacramento forever and he knows the communities, other realtors and the market really well. The first thing Pat told us when he came to see our house was that it would sell. Good start. His demeanor was so professional and positive that we always looked forward to seeing him and although he was extremely confident he never let us be naive. He took care to educate us on the market and braced us for the process of having strangers parade through our house and doing paperwork galore. He heavily marketed our house, giving us the individual attention that made us feel we were his only clients (not true by a long shot). He gave excellent advice, steering us on more than one occasion away from an unreasonable offer or an overambitious purchasing plan. He sold our house in 30 days at a price that we were thrilled with. Still, he let us know that he would have waited much longer for whatever deal was right for us – he always seemed more concerned with providing us quality representation than with his own best interests or commission. Pat went above and beyond and made us laugh at the thought that we ever considered going forward without a realtor. Every step of the way he was trustworthy and knowledgeable. I’d recommend him highly to anyone considering entering the real estate market. Pat Vogeli, Coldwell Banker: 207-4515. Perhaps the right realtor is the key to surviving in what’s perceived to be a slowing market. Incidentally, Pat’s also a SacRag fan!!!

  1. Is Pat of Swiss origin? I used to work with a Vogeli, and he was Swiss & had a cool accent and was tolerant of comments about cheese and Swiss Miss. (Not that this matters in the grand scheme of things regarding house selling — just curious.)

  2. I’m sure Mr. Vogeli’s a fine agent, but this sure reads like an ad. The fact is there are lots of good agents, and the great ones truly earn their commissions. But no matter the market, a house competitively priced, in good condition, “staged” for showing and marketed aggressively will sell.

When I sold my first home, the agent had been collecting the names/numbers of first-time buyers at his other open houses. The day before he put my house in the MLS, he called every one of those people and alerted them that he had something in their price range. Smart move on his part, and one of those people bought the house.

The work of agents is going to get harder, and you definitely want to get one who has the brains to price the place right and the drive to get it exposed to the right people. As we saw in the ’90s, all the agents who can’t handle anything but the good times will start shaking out of the industry as the market slows.

  3. FP, you’re right, he should have bought an ad. Also I should hit up Whole Foods and that frou frou East Sac pet store, I read some good things about those.

  4. Not an ad, just a recommendation. I encourage others with good realtor experiences to contribute their own references. Runnergirl, I’m not aware of Pat being Swiss at all but if he was I’m such a dork that I probably would have just made jokes about him being neutral.

  5. What? Someone can’t make a recommendation on here without someone else making an accusation that it’s a plant? Especially when it comes from an established author of the ‘Rag like HeyMeg. Granted she’s my wife, and I’m coming to her defense, but really FauxPaws: Whole Foods, much?

The fact of the matter is that PKV was a hell of a realtor who gave us a hell of a lot of individual attention. Plus he moved a house that was on an undesirable street during an undesirable time of the market in 30 days. 30 DAYS! Similarly situated homes have been sitting on the market for 5-7 months. Granted we were reasonable sellers asking a reasonable price, but damn it if I’m not going to give a shout-out to the Sac-native that helped make it possible.

Plus, of all the websites that should recognize and recommend good, local help, it’s the ‘Rag. I’d expect, nay, DEMAND that people who have had positive results with companies, contractors, realtors, etc. should report those experiences on the ‘Rag. If not here, then where else?

PKV: We have met our realtor for years to come. Thanks for your help, we’re extremely happy with the sell, and even happier with the buy. Highly Recommended.

  6. Just wanted to put my two cents in. Pat is also my Realtor. He helped us find the current house we are living in. And, he is trying to sell our old house. He is one of the most up front and honest people I’ve ever dealt with. I highly recommend him. I was glad to see this article give him the kudo’s he deserves.

  7. We bought our first house in Tahoe Park from Pat in 2000. He was the seller’s agent but we were very clueless as buyers. He became our buyer’s agent and was very fair in dealing with us and the seller–which can be tricky. Pat was a consummate professional and even gave us a nice gift at our housewarming party. Of course, that was before the housing market went wacko, but it was a very good first-time buying experience for us newbies. Go Pat!
