How do you beat the heat?

Let’s not beat around the bush here, Sacramento: it’s hot. But life goes on. If you aren’t a shut-in, chances are you can’t spend 24/7 laying on your kitchen floor or in an ice bath. So let’s hear it; how are you beating the heat, Sacramento? Here are some of our favorites, but we’d love to hear more. Read on.

Cool Treats

Ice Cream
CoolDMZ: I am currently taking courses at a Community College. Does anyone know if Burr’s Fountain’s “A’s and B’s Only report card” free cone policy only applies to the K-8 set? I’d love to celebrate an A in my C++ class with a free scoop of Jik-Jak.

Lollicup
FauxPaws: Why should you just suck some soda through a straw? You could have boba; that, is, a frosty drink with tapioca balls at the bottom of the cup. It’s like getting the prize in your Cracker-Jack, except it’s edible. Head for a Lollicup (10 Sacramento locations, including my favorite, on Stockton Boulevard, where you also can get sliced duck kidneys over noodles) and belly up to the bar.

Oh sure, you can order Mocha Cappuccino, but why, when you could have Lychee Jelly Milk Tea? Drink up!

Shady Spots

Head to the Cellar
sac-eats: Why not head up to the hills and down to a few dark, cool cellars, wine cellars that is. Nothing is cooler in the summer heat than a fine wine cellar. Check out the Amador Wine Country calendar of events guaranteed to keep you cool, or too drunk to notice the heat.

MC Escher at the Crocker
CoolDMZ: The Crocker Art Museum is free Sunday mornings from 10-1. I have never really considered MC Escher’s art beyond the cool factor that wears off when you turn 14 or 15, but it is pretty neat to see some actual stuff, most notably “Day and Night.”

Bus It
HeyMeg: The buses are air conditioned so if you opt for public transportation you can avoid sitting in your sauna of a car and waiting for it to cool down at the end of a work day. In my case since there is no shade in my parking lot at work and I typically have to dress up that’s a big way to beat the heat!

City Pools
CoolDMZ: Remember our city’s many fine public pools. It’s a bargain at $3 for a family of 4. On weekends, when the temp is over 101 city pools stay open until 7 pm. During the week, some of the pools are open until 7 on certain days, as follows:

  • Monday thru Friday: Clunie Pool (McKinley Park)
  • Monday/Friday – Doyle (Northgate Park), Grant High School, McClatchy, Panell-Meadowview, Sim,
  • Tuesday/Thursday – Cabrillo, Glenn Hall, Johnston, Mangan, Oki, Southside, Tahoe

SMUD This!

If you can’t beat it, out-heat it
FauxPaws: If you want to do something that’ll make the heat wave seem wimpy by comparison, now may be a great time to try Yoga Lokahot yoga. Yes, that’s right: You can pay good money to sweat your guts out, all year ’round. These days, the Yoga Loka people don’t even have to turn on the heat to get the right temperature. Think about it: This was what all Sacramento was like before air conditioning.

The hot stuff is at 4820 Folsom Blvd., in the alley behind Cafe Milazzo. Don’t forget to hydrate!

  1. since we have been without power all weekend (i think they finally fixed it today!), the only way we have been able to beat the heat is to face it head on, like tough guys. no air conditioning. no freezer. just sweat.

  2. EmDash you are such a badass! I can’t believe you’ve been without power all weekend. I was throwing a fit when my power went out for a short time yesterday. Hat’s off to you for taking the punches head on!!!!

  3. hotness brings up an excellent point… Trader Joes should be on the list because it’s a pleasant shopping experience and there is frequently a sample and a free dixie cup of cold beverage.

    mmm frozen chunks of anything…

  4. “Frozen chunks of anything..” EXCEPT haggis, that would be nasty.

EmDash, you are a champ. (Have you been heat training at the hot yoga studio?)

  5. The parents were visiting this weekend for our record highs. When our power went out on Sunday, we did what any quick-thinking people should do: go to IKEA for hours of tchochke shopping and Swedish Meatballs.
