Robbery @ Arden Fair

While running an errand at Arden Fair this afternoon, I heard the sound of breaking glass — not like someone dropping an item on the hard floor, but like a large window breaking.

A few of us were able to see bits and pieces of the scene unfold as we looked down from the second level into DeVons Jewelers where we could see sales staff cowered under their display cases while a trio of robbers smashed cases and loaded up on jewelry. Naturally, many folks in the mall were on their cell phones to the local authorities.

To map it out, DeVons is on the first floor at the main entrance. If you walk in the mall past Fresh Choice and heading toward Nordstrom, DeVons is on the right, just past Bebe and Godiva.

This went on for what seemed like an eternity but was probably only about 20-30 seconds in reality. The three young robbers were wearing what looked like dust masks (safety first when robbing stores — don’t inhale any shards of glass!), and they quickly made their way out of the store and out the front entrance, all while their whereabouts and descriptions were being relayed to the authorities.

How brazen or stupid are they to do this at such a busy time, and to hit a store that’s inside the mall and requires a good 40-50 yard walk/run out to one of the busiest parking lots in the region? I’m not advocating thinking out one’s criminal acts in a more logical manner, as these young men quickly made hundreds of patrons sore afraid on what was otherwise a regular Thursday afternoon. These criminals are becoming more fearless, while we innocent bystanders are the ones who face the fear.

Friday morning update: THEY GOT AWAY WITH IT, according to the news last night & this morning’s Bee.

  1. Broad daylight in a mall. Three robbers. Someone help me pick my jaw off the floor. What the hell is happening to Sacramento?

  2. Isn’t there mall security or something that could be called even before police arrive? Really? I can’t believe no one was able to chase these people down. That is so crazy. Also I can’t imagine walking past a Godiva store to rob something else but that’s my own problem.

  3. I’m shocked that this is not all over the news. So far there is a Bee Metro section story (page 3) and CBS13 (is that where you saw it on the news?)

Nothing on News 10 or KCRA as far as I can see. Which is funny because KCRA has that KCRA Experience booth a few hundred feet away!!

I guess you have to steal $600 million in sales taxes to get any attention! They should have just calmly walked in and asked for a quarter for every hundred dollars worth of merchandise. Should I stop? I could do like 8 more.

  4. It’s shocking that they were not caught since they were in there for two minutes (according to the Bee), and they still had to get out the front door. It also says that they had a car waiting for them — since when can you just idle in your car right in front of the mall? I saw one guy (a citizen) chasing after them after they left the store and were heading outside, but there was no sign of security.

  5. It was on the Q58 10pm news last night, but it was on after the 2nd commercial break, and it was maybe a 15 second story, tops.

DMZ, the robbers were wearing sports team apparel, but it was red, white, and blue, so it wasn’t Kings’ stuff — so they’ll probably vote “no” in November too. (And no, it wasn’t the old school Kings’ red, white, and powder blue.)

  6. Um, this type of jewelry store robbery is very common. Its happining all over the nation.

Arden fair mall jewelry stores has been hit in daylight like 3 times that I know of recently.
Davis was hit last month. Their is a group that that has hit tens of stores from the bay area all the way to sacramento over the past few years.
