Introducing Placeblogger, the hottest new thing in blogs dedicated to specific cities. FauxPaws pointed this out to me a few months ago but now it has launched, complete with major financial backing.
Placeblogs are sometimes called “hyperlocal sites” because some of them focus on news events and items that cover a particular neighborhood in great detail — and in particular, places that might be too physically small or sparsely populated to attract much traditional media coverage.
Sounds right up our alley. Here are the Sacramento placeblogs. Now with 33% McClatchy meat!! (Ours is in the queue.)
I’ll have you know, this post was supposed to be a long hilarious rant about how their “Add a placeblog” submission form lacked what some might say is the most important field, “Website.” Up until about an hour ago, anyway. The folks at Placeblogger got themselves out of a severe tongue-lashing by catching on to that major blunder before CoolDMZ could put down his chicken sandwich and blog about it. Although on the other hand, blogs that must have entered their info in the early stages, like “Choosingdemocracy” there, might not have realized they needed to find another field in which to put their URL. For the record: Choosing Democracy. Oops would you look at that, looks like 21Q left their URL off too.
Damn. I enjoy a hilarious rant, and I just obstructed one!
Originally, I assumed that I’d have to keep being the primary person to collect new examples of placeblogs, so it was originally designed to automatically fetch the URL from the RSS feed. But not all sites have an RSS feed, and even for sites that do some people may not know what they are or who they are. So now it works the other way around.
For the sites that didn’t autofetch a URL, I’ve done a sort of these and I’m adding the URLs myself so that people’s contributions won’t go to waste.
I’ve updated Choosing Democracy and 21Q; but it looks like Choosing Democracy’s RSS feed may not be working. We have it, but it times out when we’re trying to get to it.
I’ll be watching for future rantage!

Oh, one more thing: Placeblogger was launched on a “sell a few things on eBay” budget. Maybe that will change, though!

Ah, auto fetching the site URL does make sense…
Looking forward to being a part of Placeblogger. Did I misinterpret the involvement of Pressthink and Center for Citz. Media? I was paraphrasing Lost Remote when I wrote that you had financial backing. And by paraphrasing I mean taking the word “backed” and inserting the word “financially.”
