Call Before You Dig

Before you pick up that shovel to start your Memorial Day weekend project in the yard, be sure to call 811 to make sure you won’t be digging into any utility lines that could shut down service to your home or even your entire neighborhood — not to mention risking injury or death to yourself or others around you.

With more and more jurisdictions “undergrounding” utilities, there’s a chance you have anything from gas, electrical, telephone, fiber optic, or cable lines running under your property.

It might take a few days to have any utilities located, but it’s better to put off your project schedule a little bit rather than risking a shut-down of services or bodily harm.

Author’s note: I first learned about the “Call Before You Dig” concept years ago at the nail salon I sometimes went to in Berkeley since there were “Call Before You Dig” stickers and posters all over the place. I think maybe they thought these promotional items said something else. Now, I think a funny corollary to this would be if one of those Asian tattoos that many non-Asian people sport actually said, “Call Before You Dig.”

  1. I actually read it as “call before… you dig?” Like a person asking if the first statement was understood.

English is my first language, with jive being my second.

  2. If you happen to have a marking pen with you, it’s fairly easy to change the “g” in the last word to and “e”, giving those friendly stickers a slightly different meaning (or so I’ve heard).

  3. Interesting take, rural mysteries! Love it! You’re like the “Twisted Titles” of many publications where readers change a letter of a popular title or saying to have it result in something totally different and humorous.
