Nick Miller blogs at Sound Advice today that the words “Sac Hates Hip Hop” have been tagged on boarded-up former site of the Library, which closed last year after a fatal shooting.
What would it take to prove that Sac does not hate hip hop? Would it entail a single Sacramentan saying they love hip hop? Would a hip hop issue of Sac Mag settle the deal? Would Mayor Fargo have to freestyle at city council meetings?
Eau contraire, mon graffito, I think it is you who hate painted walls.
It was me!! I should have put what I really meant, “college kids hate convenient alcohol,” because I just can’t figure out how a bar located across the street from a college keeps going out of business. I know there was a shooting there, but come on. Booze.

I think it just sounded better than “Sac hates murder.”

There’s a bit of irony in the acronym of their statement.

“Sach ate ship hop” is a reference to the early 1700’s craze of signing onto a ship bound for the New World, enjoying the first meal served to all hands, and then doing a “ship hop”– leaping over the side, and swiming to shore with a full belly and a great story. “Eating a ship hop” meant that you got caught- either restrained, or you waited too long, and were too far out to sea to swim home. Sach was a popular newspaper cartoon charachter of the time, who would often get into such scrapes. Lil’ rascal! Anyway- one of the popular storylines was about Sach, who ate a ship hop, and ended up in New Amsterdam! Must have been a former library patron, into the stories of old, but with a shakey spray painting hand.

Sacramento does hate hip-hop, Maybe not your true school heads who have suffered and slaved for years to get one of the most widely accepted art forms world wide to be recognized within these city limits as a positive influence in the community but the people who see the potential threat of a political voice rising from out of the ashes of slanderous, defaming and often misrepresented hip-hop culture not gangster rap or thug music. There is no effort on the part of high ranking city officials on down to your typical racist Sac police to enhance this culture even more so they have used ever excuse in the book to quite the flames of this culture by cutting funding to after school programs geared at focusing on different aspects of the culture such as b-boyin and dj-ing to shutting down every club that continually did hip-hop shows, to closing down the only legal graffiti wall in Sacramento. This is just to name a few. Not to mention they held meetings in private, closed to the public scrutiny, and told many club owners if the put hip-hop on their fliers and advertisements they would target their clubs. I know this because I was told first hand by 3 respected club owners. Be aware that even though the Library was closed because of a fatal shooting (may that womens soul rest in peace) it doesn’t change the fact that it had already been targeted as well as Stoney Inn, Capitol Garage, Silk and others… This is real and is creditable. Just do your own research.

can you present your research on the average racist Sac PD officer? i’m assuming you can put that on a graph and quantify the average? i’m not sure what the units are for racism. hates per second?
also i’d love to see your research on the efforts of high ranking city officials elsewhere to enhance hip hop culture. and Mayor Bloomberg really grooving on a Common track doesn’t count. admit it TPR, that last crack made you laugh.

Oh Yippee!
Ay yo, G’: Hip hop ain’t no culture any more n’ Jazz is a “culture” or Trance is a “culture.” It’s music- i’ght? Ain’t no obligation to “enhance” no culture anyhow (you enhancing my “culture,” homie? Do tell!). An’ maybe if the “culture” took more care and effort to portray itself (and distinguish itself from the negative aspects of “gangsta’ life”) via positive actions, hip-hop wouldn’t be in this situation.
Buy your own wall to paint. Run your own club in a safe manner without annoying the neighbors and engaging in illegal activity, or allowing illegal activity to take place.
“I got no control over what the patrons bring in” doesn’t cut it- particularly when the “culture” (??) doesn’t seem to be contributing on its own, and is just demanding that others give, give give: “We want a wall to paint. We want after school programs geared at focusing on different aspects of the culture such as b-boyin and dj-ing.” Nobel endevours I’m sure, but maybe the “culture” could incorporate finding ways to constructively provide for these needs on its own? Or is paying your own way through life “not part of the culture”?
I’ve got nothing against hip hop. It falls into the same catagory of “annoying noise, interesting dance moves, good way to work off energy” as death metal for me. Stop portraying the music as the subject of rasicm: It’s not: not any more than raves getting busted for X & whippits are the subject of racism. Stop the victim mentality. Do something constructive for the *community* (broaden your thought of what “the community” is), and see how the community will help you. Of course, the community will ask you to tone it down. And in exchange for gradual acceptance, you will. That is what society is based on, and when society develops norms for behavior, you have the begining of a “culture.”

My research comes from years of personal experience but for the sake of time I’ll just address one situation that happened to me in late 06′. This is right during the week when I was doing the Nas show at The Colonial. I was walking down Jst. in broad daylight, dropping fliers when I was approached by a Sac P.D. on a bike. He said he wanted to talk to me for a minute but when I asked him if he was reporting to the scene of a crime or if I matched the description of a suspect in a crime or if their was a warrant for my arrest, he became aggravated as if knowing my rights should be aggravating to those sworn to protect them. He then starting making condescending remarks about me going to liberal schools and having liberal professors and that I should watch what I say because it was in my best interest. This went on for about 10 mins then came 2 more “Peace Officers” who began questioning me about a shooting at Keek Da Sneek concert. When I asked them if they knew who I was they said yes and that they had been to my prior events, so I told them if you know who I am and you know what I do then you know I had nothing to do with that concert and that this whole encounter could be perceived as harassment. Just then a un-marked, brand new black mustang pulls up suited with all types of surveillance equipment and an under-cover who points at me and says “That’s him” and the other police officer goes “That’s him right”. I said “That’s who?” and asked for the badge numbers and superiors but as I said that they just looked at me crazy and then they all left. What I learned from that was there were people in places of authority who were monitoring the Hip-hop community of Sacramento for their personal gain, what their gain is is yet to be found but if I know the powers that be, it’s to eliminate the threat which is their first priority. Sacramento has always been plagued with racist cops from the racial profiling that has gone on from the 80’s till now, to the police shootings of the 90’s that put Sac on the map for use excessive force, to Prop 21 that made any minority walking in a group of 4 or more a target and subject to being stopped and questioned for nothing. Anyone who’s a minority in Sac and has lived there for more than a few years knows exactly what I’m talking about. I dont find this humorous and as far as “racism per second” all i have to say is have a cop call you a nigger to your face and see if that image ever leaves your memory. This is alive and well whether you choose to believe it or not.

Oh yeah, one more thing to Turty! My folks and I have been a active part of this “culture” and scene for over 10 years easy, throwing shows and concerts, putting together after school workshops that incorporate the arts of our “culture”, working with at risk youth in low-income areas, hosting events for anti-gang rallies to benefits for everything from Aids to Katrina, helping non-profits, to speaking at the Capitol steps and CSUS. So the next time you decided to pull someone’s card on being a victim you had best know their history and what they have already done as well as doing. We don’t ask others to do what we are capable of doing and the true meaning of activist is willing participation. Also, dont speak out on our culture again because the roots of this culture go back to slavery and is culminated from everything from the civil rights movement to Jazz and so much more. We are the voice of the poor and oppressed, the voice of dissent against any injustice, but most important the voice of the voiceless. Stand for something or die for nothing. To me this is Hip-Hop, this is my culture and I’m proud to serve my community.

Just spit-ballin’ here, but calling the entire police force a racist institution might be equivalent to calling all of hip-hop violent and dangerous.

Its apparent that you all may have no understanding of the situation and quite frankly i don’t expect you to. Gangster rap can be violent, thug rap can be violent but Hip-Hop is as only violent as the revolutionary change it inspires. Sac P.D. has a history of racism and violence that still continues today so I’m not generalizing when saying racist police are out here but addressing a social issue! Are all cops racist, no but does that excuse the ones that are, HELL NO IT DOESN’T.. And as far as what I said to Turty, I stand by it. You shouldn’t speak on what you don’t know and what you don’t know ask. Wisdom is the application of knowledge. Use it. Know that my words are inspired by the love of my people and not the hatred towards others and I live this not just chime in on blogs! We are Sac Hates Hip Hop! Look it up if you doubt……

OK I’ll ask then. What is the thinking behind going with the slogan “Sac Hates Hip Hop” as opposed to maybe, “Hey Sac, Hip Hop is really about making positive change and is something we can all get behind”? I just don’t see it as a slogan that anybody is going to get behind. It certainly doesn’t make me want to attend a Nas concert.
By the way I can’t get to the MySpaces from work so I can’t visit the website at the moment to do my research 😦

“what you don’t know ask”
Ok-
“my words are inspired by the love of my people”
Err- what “people” are you talking about here? You mean “Americans”, or just some Americans, determined mainly by their race? Because that could be taken to sound a little… Racist?
“We don’t ask others to do what we are capable of doing”
Great- does that mean you will be buying your own wall to spraypaint? And setting up after school programs for b-boyin and dj-ing? Or are you asking people “not of your culture” to pay for these things? If so, are you willing to pay for my cultural after school programs too?
Not meaning to be disrespectful, but you seem to want “freedom” to do certain things, but are unwilling to pay for the means or consequenses of those “freedoms.” DJ-ing sounds like fun, but I also have a right to sleep at midnight to go to work the next day. And I have the right to not have my house or fence painted. By the same token, I don’t paint your property, and I’d expect the same respect back. Any “culture” that disrespects mine (by painting my property for instance), I have no respect for. And that’s not a racial issue- that’s a respect issue.

OK OK OK….IM HERE….Im the dude that started the Sac Hates Hip-Hop Movement…
1st Things 1st….I dont agree with the TAGGING on The Library….THAT SHIT IS NOT COOL AT ALL!
As far as the shooting that happend there I really feel for the girl and her family and WAAAY to many people have died over bullshit period.
The night that she died it was college night not Hip-Hop night….They (The Dj’s) where spining Top40….The media decided to call it HipHop night…Next thing you know the place was shut down…Now Ive also seen other shit like that happen at other clubs such as elements which is now called AVALON and Empire but because they are zoned downtown it wont be shut down…just changed to a different name.
ON A DIFFERENT NOTE…I started the movement because of all the shit the hiphop community in sac was taking…Other people like Old Ghost jumped on with there reasons for backing the movement…and yeah im TPR too….The radio stations where not supporting the locals like other stations do in other citys….the cops (which are not all racist by the way) was shutting down venues and hiphop events….Locals where not supporting there own artist and GOD THE SNR which throws The Sammie Awards was not even in tune with our sceen and nominating the same acts for the last 5yrz….That was My reason for starting it up….Next thing you know….DJ Supe From 103.5 Was fired for Talking to the media about the movement and he was also the only person putting on locals on the radio every sunday in that radio station….BIG UPS TO 102.5 for keeping the Future Flavor Show going everysunday as well….
AND NO…WE ALL DONT GHOST RIDE THE WHIP AND THIZZ (E) WE DONT ALL CARRY GUNZ AND KILL PEOPLE ON TRACKS AND BITCH THIS AND HOE THAT….
Im known as a Emcee that Battle Raps (FOR THOSE THAT DONT KNOW WHAT THAT IS WATCH 8 MILE) lol….and yeah I talk about issues in my city and yeah ive thrown shows for Hurricane Katrina so yeah ive helpd out in many ways….Im not all about MONEY….like some rapperz….
Anywayz Im that dude that started the movement I dont agree with the tagging on the wall over there at the library and I believe sac loves hiphop….I just said that shit because well….at that time….I felt that way…its my opinion and if you dont like it fuck you….Sounds like a personal problem lol
Its the same thing as if you dont like what you hear turn it off….That simple….Im not opressed…im pist…I love where I live…but when I got somthing to say I will….no matter what…

Mahtiebush: Here is a free suggestion, change the slogan to “Support Local Hip Hop”? You sound like a positive dude but I think the “Sac Hates” angle is going to get you nowhere. What am I supposed to do about a ridiculous statement like “sac hates hip hop”?? Now “support local hip hop,” that gives me something to do. I know you probably have lots of t-shirts etc printed up 🙂 but still, free advice.

Dude, I was at the Little Brother show and saw the performances. Some were real good, but a lot of the underground is stuck in a rut. I can see no discernable progress in a lot of people’s lyrics and beats since the mid to late 90’s. Hip hop has to evolve and stop expecting people to get hype for you just cause you say you’re real hip hop. This is not targeted at all the performers that night. Actually, not even anybody from this town. You can really say that SAC HATES MUSIC period. Our town never supports good venues, we don’t support good local bands. That’s why people leave Sac to get big while towns no bigger than Sac, like Austin or Portland can have huge, thriving music scenes. So in part, both artist and community have to step the game up. Radio sucks. Lets start a pirate radio station. If the school childrens can do it, why can’t we?

chris: an all-local hip hop pirate radio station would be awesome. just don’t call it Sac Hates Radio FM…
Mahtiebush: even with your reverse thing you’re still only getting people who are already into the cause. I’m saying with a “support local hip hop angle” you could get people into the fold who love to support local stuff over non-local, whatever the stuff is.
