UPDATE: Rocklin beats Del Oro, wins bowl game berth

Congratulations to the Rocklin Thunder, who with their 21-14 defeat of Del Oro in the rain on Friday night secured a berth in the CIF D-II state championship bowl game on Saturday in Carson, where they’ll play Servite of Anaheim. Unfortunately they apparently lost their star quarterback to an injury at the game, so they’ll hand the ball to a plucky underclassman QB who’ll try to make his small town proud, while trying to keep the hard-livin’ fullback from going off the deep end and also taking care of his gramma. They should make a so-so movie and then a superlative primetime TV show out of this story.

In reality, though, it looks like the replacement QB was actually their starting QB at the beginning of last season, who they lost to an early season injury last year.

Original post:
The Bee’s Joe Davidson has great roundup of area high school teams that have a shot at a prep bowl game. There are quite a few of them, in each division. Unbeaten Rocklin has to be a lock for the D-II game, having beat Grant, Nevada Union, and its opponent in tonight’s Sac-Joaquin Section championship game, Del Oro. Rocklin senior wideout Holden Huff might not even be his team’s best receiver, but he has the area’s best football name. Del Oro’s no slouch in this game, so basically get your butt on over to Davis tonight if you’re a prep football fan!

  1. From news10.net:

The Modesto Christian Crusaders football team captured their first state title Friday, defeating the Francis Parker Lancers 44-40 in the California Interscholastic Federation Small Schools Bowl Game in Carson.

Only the third northern California team to win a state championship game! Until tonight?

    From kcra.com:

The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Home Depot Center in Carson. It will air on Comcast Channel 14. You can follow the game on Twitter at @KCRANEWS. If you are attending the game, send photos to NewsTips@KCRA.com and you may just see them on TV!

    Pretty cool use of Twitter.
