Tako’s: Diminishing Returns

When Tako’s first opened a few months ago, I thought the idea novel, not too novel, but just novel enough to be interesting, not Dostoyevsky but Grisham, if you get my drift. The whole “Korean taco” thing has been kicking around a while, most notably in the SoCal food truck scene, but it still has legs and the Sac market shows no signs of being inundated with bulgogi tostadas anytime soon.

So, I figured Tako’s, with its clever name and interestingly renovated old gas station lodgings, had something to say. Turns out, what it wanted to say was unfortunately covered up by sauce, noise, and sauce. Here’s a slowly declining series of visits to illustrate my point.

Visit 1: I strolled up on Tako’s on a beautiful summer day. The lunch rush had petered out, the air was redolent with chiles bloomed in oil, and the faint hint of techno pop wafted over the Bose system. The place felt retro-hip and appropriately kitschy. The menu was Chipotle-simple. Everything smelled great.

RIP Josie (& now Brownie)

The Sacramento Zoo’s blog is reporting that Josie, the matriarch of their chimpanzee troop, was euthanized today due to old age. She was approximately 48 years old, and had been a resident here for 26 years. Josie liked to paint and frequently stood at the glass to the enclosure to wave to visitors.

Update: Today, Scoopy reports that Brownie, the oldest hyena in U.S captivity and model for the film The Lion King, has also died. Sacramentans are 35% less saddened by this than they are for Josie’s loss, as Josie had opposable thumbs and a better appreciation of poop.

Election 2012 Open Thread

It’s Election day, Sacramento. Make sure you cast your ballot. Find your polling place at SmartVoter.org. If you are “Vote By Mail,” don’t put it in the mail today, drop your ballot at any polling place. Keep this page open in your browser to find out what’s happening as soon as it develops and one of us comes up with something snarky to say about it. So basically until Thursday. Kings season starts tonight at Chicago

“Teamwork makes the dream work” via Twitter/@Isaiah_Thomas2

Your Sacramento Kings tip off in a few hours in Chicago. Jonathan Santiago at Cowbell Kingdom has a great roundup of the national media predictions for the 2012-13 Kings. Folks predicting the team to be a sleeper playoff team are out there, but most are non-believers. The Sactown Royalty preview by Greg Wissinger urges caution but acknowledges some improvements in Robinson, James Johnson and Chuck Hayes’s health.

Last year a .545 winning percentage was the cutoff on the Western Conference playoffs. I think that is a more realistic goal for 13-14, but I don’t think an improvement of 100 percentage points and a 35 win season is out of reach this year. Go Kings!

Big shows coming to State Fair?

Poppy is ready 2 rock
Sweeping changes are happening at the California State Fair. Cal Expo’s two top managers, Norb Bartosik and Brian May, recently announced their retirements. The Sacramento Bee has taken this opportunity to call on Governor Brown to save the State Fair. The grounds need $50 million for repairs and more for renovations, and the State Fair needs revision and reinvention to create a 21st Century experience for visitors to the California Exposition.

One promising step is the appointment of a major music figure to Cal Expo’s Board of Directors. Sacramento, get ready for big time music acts at The Fair.

News 10 to broadcast Kings games

I’m really excited to learn that News 10 will broadcast some Sacramento Kings games this season. As a cable cord-cutter, the biggest issue that I run into is a lack of live sports. I’m not an avid TV sports viewer so it’s not a big deal, but I do miss being able to tune in and check out the Kings. Hopefully this helps expose more people to this squad which I think is going to be pretty exciting.

Before you get too excited, it’s actually just 10 games that will be aired on News 10. Here is the list:

  • Sunday, Nov. 18 vs. Brooklyn Nets (3 pm)
  • Sunday, Dec. 16 vs. Denver Nuggets (3 pm)
  • Friday, Dec. 28 vs. New York Knicks (7 pm)
  • Saturday, Jan. 12 vs. Miami Heat (7 pm)
  • Friday, Jan. 25 vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (7 pm)
  • Saturday, Feb. 2 at New York Knicks (4:30 pm)
  • Saturday, Feb. 9 vs. Utah Jazz (7 pm)
  • Friday, Mar. 1 at San Antonio Spurs (5:30 pm)
  • Saturday, Mar. 23 at Denver Nuggets (6 pm)
  • Saturday, Mar. 30 at Los Angeles Lakers (7 pm)

It’s official: Kings home court will be “Sleep Train Arena”

The Kings made the announcement a short while ago:

The Sacramento Kings have just announced a new naming rights deal for the building formerly known as Arco Arena turned Power Balance Pavilion. While negotiations with local mattress retailer Sleep Train collapsed last month when the Maloof family refused to guarantee the Kings would stay in Sacramento past this season, the two sides returned to the table and hammered out today’s announced deal.

It’s a multi-year agreement, and apparently the new signage will be up in November. Personally I will have no trouble calling it Sleep Train Arena. Lots of “sleep” related jokes can be made as well. Let’s just hope they are more along the lines of “The exciting Kings put a sleeper hold on the Memphis Grizzlies tonight” and not like “The woeful Kings looked like they were sleepwalking tonight”…

City of (Blue) Trees

The Blue Trees 2006 – Melbourne, Australia

According to Sacramento’s Facebook feed, Australian artist Konstantin Dimopoulos (obviously descended from Scottish prison convicts, you can tell by the name) will be painting a block of Sacramento sycamores blue tomorrow. Look for the trees on 13th between J & K.

When asked why painting trees is his thing, Dimopoulos said, “Trees are largely invisible in our daily lives, and it’s not until it’s too late that we realise how important they are to us both aesthetically and environmentally…Through colour I am making a personal statement about the spirituality of trees and their importance to our very survival: trees are the lungs of the planet.”

I was going to get all snarky on that, but I have to admit I think it’s a great, fun idea. Good on ya, mate.
