KCRA: Literally insane for the whales

Posted May 16, 2007 at 10:57 AM by CoolDMZ in KCRA, Local Media, Local Nooz, Show your Sacto, The Natural World (13 comments)

“Whale Watch” is getting out of hand. The entire KCRA 6 PM newscast last night was dedicated to “Whale Watch.” At about 10:15 last night Edie Lambert was talking to Toby Ross, the City Manager of West Sacramento, who cautioned would-be whale watchers to stay off of levees that are not meant for car traffic. Would it be cruel to suggest that drivers too stupid to stay off of non-roads in order to watch whales too stupid to stay out of fresh water rivers are a match made in heaven?

However, it does reflect well on the kind of news that KCRA likes to present. Flipping over to CBS13 at 11 is like watching the Great Britain PR spot on “Children of Men.” War. Famine. Dead horses. Only CBS 13 still soldiers on…

The Plumwin clan actually got into a debate over whether the coverage was excessive. I found the ongoing coverage to be absolutely insane. Also, the stupid KCRA HD (a must now!) helicopter spotted the whales again this morning about 6:15 and that put all the regular news on hold again.

I can’t want for the KCRA “HD” helicopter to assist in helping “Dave and Lois” (I’ve just named the whales as per a Hearst Argyle memo) to return to the sea. It’s not like there isn’t a precedent, Michael Kidd and his cameraman, Ron Middlekauff, rescued “Rodeo the dog” during the 1996 Yuba County flood.

KCRA “HD” is just looking to jump the shark, and what better to jump a shark with than a whale, or two!

LOL!

Just to add to the whale insanity: Good Day Sacramento is having a “name that whale” web poll/write-in thing.

Sacbee.com is using an interactive Google maps thingy that allows you to virtually harass and follow the whale’s progress on an hour-by-hour basis!!!

Man, I’m so tired of hearing about the whales. So I’m going to save all the news channels a little bit of time and compile just the facts:

1. Two whales, Sac river.
2. Both are injured, hit by a boat.
3. They’re tryin’ to get them out.
4. People need to stay away.

Keep those four in mind as you watch the local news over the next two days. They’re repeating the same four facts over and over again.

Except CBS 13. I like them. :)

I found a baby whale in my backyard this morning. I hosed him down and fed him some Cheerios.

I just hope the whales sing “Louie Louie” into the microphones they put underwater, just like the ones in the Far Side cartoon.

The local channels are desperate for a big story.

The information on channel 13 that some marine biologists mentioned was interesting. But, when reporters asked the people watching the whales what they think of the whales… that didn’t add anything to the coverage.

Are the rumors true that the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau is planning a series of tourism commercials around the mother and son whales visitng Sactown on their way north to Alaska? I also heard the Maloofs had something in the works. Who next? The Cache Creek Indians? Williams Shatner? Star Trek 2007: The Search for Arnold?

Channel 13, or maybe it was Garimendi, (I wasn’t paying close attention), named the whales “Delta” and “Dawn.” On the news, one of whale watchers was about to sing “Delta Dawn,” so I turned my TV off.

Garimendi spends a lot of time watching the whales. Whenever I see Garimendi, what I think is that his daughter wasn’t charged with drunk driving… even though the amount of alcohol in her system was over the legal limit.

But hey, Lt. Governor Garimendi likes whales!

The whale story is still plauging the local news. It’s past annoying now it’s just pathetic.
