I saw this van yesterday on 50 but was unable to snap a good photo. Luckily, Flickr user timballas was!

WTF Plumbing

It looks like this photo was popular on the internets a few years ago but I wouldn’t be CoolDMZ if I wasn’t 3 years late to an internets phenomenon. I actually can’t find any references to this company other than this photo and people using the acronym for its literal usage in relation to plumbing problems. Is this for real?

Name that horrifying animal part

My daughter and I came upon the detached tail of some sort of rodent in a park near the American River this weekend. Follow the “Continue reading” link to help me identify the animal.

Sign Sudoku - Land Park Pony Rides

I snapped a shot of the sign at the pony rides at Land Park, because I thought it would make a great logic puzzle to get our brains buzzing this fine Monday morning…

Bee photos from Olympics

Via zokuga, two photo blogs to check out for images from Beijing–Paul Kitagaki’s images on the Sac Bee photo blog, and former Bee photog Kevin German’s photoblog “Wandering Light.” German lives in Vietnam and does kickass photo documentaries of Southeast Asia, as I learned in the last five minutes. Here is my favorite of his so far:

CoolDMZ’s trip to Ashland (PHOTOS)

Posted at 8:00 AM by CoolDMZ in Photos, Travel (8 comments)

Took the family up Oregon way last week for a real old-fashioned Summer Vacation. I had never been up I-5 past Woodland, oddly enough, and although you don’t see much up that way–and the air was still smoky–it was a great drive. The flat area of Siskiyou County, the part containing Yreka, is just about the most beautiful country you’ll ever see. It would be bonkers at sunset.

Our destination was Ashland, which is a great little town. More charm in that town per square inch than most other entire other cute small towns. Slideshow after the jump…

A little belated, and not as good as the ones zokuga snapped at the Folsom Cattle Drive but I thought I’d share my photos from the Fourth of July classic hometown parade in Nevada City. Click through for a slideshow…

PHOTOS: Ken Fox’s Great Statues of Auburn

Posted at 12:00 PM by CoolDMZ in Arts & Entertainment, Photos, Travel (9 comments)

I stumbled upon a wonderful roadside attraction in Auburn yesterday: Ken Fox’s Great Statues. Ken is the creator of the gold miner statue in downtown Auburn, but he also has several other massive concrete figures to his name. Specifically several (mostly) naked collossi just off 49 near In-n-Out.

The statues are unadvertised, which only adds to your initial shock when they loom into view. A few stand in a parking lot of an otherwise ordinary street. The parking lot belongs to the office of the dentist who built the statues, Ken Fox.

The Bee clicks with history

Posted at 8:42 AM by FauxPaws in Arts & Entertainment, Local Media, Nostalgia, Photos, Recommendations (No comments)

The Crocker Art Museum has a special exhibition starting tomorrow, “Without Words: The Sacramento Bee’s Most Powerful Photographs.” From the catalog:

Protests. Tragedy. Disaster. Despair.  Each day in the pages of The Sacramento Bee are photos that tell a story few words can. Since the first photographic image appeared in 1898, The Bee’s photojournalists have taken our readers to the frontlines of the most important events that have shaped our history.

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of The Sacramento Bee, The Crocker Art Museum presents the photography that brings to life events seen through the lenses of The Bee’s award-winning photographers.

A collection of nearly 20 images will be on display in the Crocker Art Museum’s Ballroom. A highlight of the exhibition is Assassination Foiled taken by longtime Bee photojournalist Dick Schmidt, who captured the image of Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme after her failed 1975 assassination attempt on President Gerald Ford in Capitol Park.

You can hear Dick Schmidt (long-time friend of mine, by the way) being interviewed today at 2 p.m. on CPR’s show “Insight” (KXPR; FM 90.9). He’s a low-key, charming and funny man, so I’m guessing the interview will be a great one. The Crocker exhbition runs through March 21.
