At the risk of distracting attention from my earlier post, of which I’m quite proud, I’d like to draw attention to the OntoWorld‘s entry on Sacramento. What’s OntoWorld? Only an experiment in Web 3.0, the “semantic web” where all information in the world is ordered in a logical relational manner. Or something. Anyway, about Sacramento some yahoo has written
The Central Valley’s would-be hipsters and hard cases, meanwhile, have affected the moniker Sactown in imitation of the nearby hip-hop hub of Oaktown.
While I love the phrase “hard case” I think that description is a bit unfair. Affected? “Would-be”? It is hardly an affectation. Do the real hipsters call it something else?
Oh, this might be a reaction to the fact that CoolDMZ is widely known as a “super dope homeboy from the Sactown” and Oakland fans of MC Hammer find that whack. Can’t Touch This.

i love that “Sacratomato” gets a straight read but somehow “Sactown” is a poser name.

I like how Sactown is an imitation of Oaktown, but when you click on Oaktown, no entry exists!!!
and that “would-be hipsters” comment really hurts my head. would-be??????

Maybe they don’t realize that “Sactown” was only chosen after a lot of other hip nicknames had been tried and tossed into the reject pile, like:
Sacramento-by-the-Sea
Sac’o’nails
The City by “The City”
Sac-a-jawea
Sacramento-not-quite-by-the-Sea
Sacburgh
Sactownship
Murder Capital of CA (unless you exclude felony murders)
and
Sacramento-by-the-river-which-eventually-winds-up-by-the-Sea

Pft. “Sactown” has been in use a long time. I think it’s blatantly unfair. Harumph.

if you’ll permit me some serious reincorporation, maybe the entry was written by a loft-hater?

I think you’re a “would be” hipster until you show proof for three weeks straight that you use a lunchbox as a purse and listen only to music & wear clothing that came out before you were even born so as to avoid anything remotely mainstream, then you get your official hipster card. (Of course, with my NOT being a hipster, I’m probably three years too late with the lunchbox comment.)

Hipster originates from someone very up on jazz culture and trends. It is more or less defined as someone who is *extremely* interested in trends and fashion, not disinterested in them.
A true hipster only has distaste for the mainstream because it was what they were doing in the past.

Once again I come off as condescending. I think I need to stop making posts after an 8 hour work day. π

Wow, who knew that I was actually a hipster. What’s up, Daddy-O anyone want to come over, drink some martinis and listen to the new Monk/Coltrane reissue on my Ipod?

runnergirl that bit is so overplayed. i don’t care about being cool, and that’s what makes me cool, right?

What’s funny about the “would-be hipsters” (not em dash) is that they’re stereotypical in their non-mainstream kind of way, thus making them mainstream in their uniformity of unmainstreamness.

As one who’s never really been cool (paper route & headgear, anyone?), I’ve always had the tendency to “overplay bits.” I think once you hit a certain age or stage in your personal life or career, you figure out there are much more important things than wondering if you’re cool or not. You know that your family and true friends love you no matter what, that your boss just wants quality work & a good attitude, and that it really does make you feel better to treat everyone (and I do mean everyone) with equal respect and courtesy — regardless of if they’re cool or not. (Some snarkiness is OK if it’s not mean-spirited.)
