Here’s an interesting little tidbit:
Sacramento ranks last in a list of the country’s 50 largest cities for the number of uniformed police officers per capita, according to the figures compiled by the FBI.
Seems to explain a few things, doesn’t it?

yes! i saw this and was horrified. but if we can’t even give those few police officers we do have a shiny new arena and a second railroad museum, how are we ever going to attract more?

I have decided, after roughly 4 years of consideration that the City of Sacramento (not Sacramento County, although it could apply as well) has become an elitist City.
If you happen to live in the right area of any of our Council Districts, you are relatively safe from most types of violent crime, save a random homicide once or twice a year.
On the other hand, if you happen to reside in areas of the city that have a history of madness and mayhem, you should not be astonished when this continues unabated.
WAKE UP SACRAMENTO!
Fargo, Hammond, Trethaway, Pannell, McCarty and Fong could give a shit about poor people in areas where all this crime is manifesting. They posture for the media and the public but provide us citizens NO measurable results for what they pontificate over at council meetings.
I have said this time and time again, until what happens in Meadowview, Oak Park, Southside Park and Alkali Flat happens in the ritzy reaches of East Sacramento, Greenhaven and Natomas will the City react.
Sad, cause currently is tolerated in my hood would not stand a chance in other areas.

Have you noticed that the number of gang killings has decreased? That’s because more police have been sent to deal with the gangs. The police station used to be downtown; now it’s on Freeport Blvd… close to the violent crime area.

In my ‘hood we hired our own private police force to keep the riff raff out. We’re raising money to build a wall around our neighborhood so that we can survive while the riff raff on the outside thin themselves out Lord of the Flies style.

Hey Lynn-
The saturation of cops in high “gang” areas was a bandaid on a critical wound. The Police shift resources from one high crime area to another until the UCR (Universal Crime Report) numbers start to decline. It’s all a chase for federal funding, and we all know that the Fed’s like low numbers especially when funding local municipal programs….especially ones that fight crime at the local level.
Again, WAKE UP SACRAMENTO!
As long as we chill like an ice cream truck, the city will continue to cut public safety services in order to pad the general fund so they can subsidize the next failing downtown redevelopment project.
Is that worth your safety?

Shit, I forgot to mention my homeboy Steve Cohn! He strikes me as the lesser of evils, but still evil.

May I indulge you with a selfserving and shameless commercial? I’ve been arrested, my cop buds run out of town on a rail, they tried to charge me with operinging an unlicensed guard/patrol business whne it was just one of the most effective neighborhood watches in the city. Gave them no slack and just said “Bring it On!” Credentials enough?
Okay Joey, you’ll probably shoot me for this but let’s see what one brave reporter had to say: deal?
Cover story in SN&R rag: http://crimewatch.us/snr.htm The story that put the target on my back. They won’t come at you like men, but they’ll try to take you out with a back shot. COWARDS ALL and I’ve called them that to their faces. Any time, any place Chief… bring it on! Councl members, mayor and city attorney too.
“In recent years, however, Jenest (pronounced Ja-nay) has tied his battle for safer neighborhoods directly to the decline in the number of Sacramento patrol officers on the street. In domino-like fashion, Jenest lays out statistic after statistic in his attempt to convince all who would listen that management in the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) has cut the numbers of patrol officers and, therefore, reduced public safety.â€Â
“I’m talking warm butts in the seat, not what’s on paper,†notes one veteran patrol sergeant with the department more than 20 years. “That’s what I need to care about–not an officer on pregnancy leave or on light duty or vacation.â€Â
The same sergeant claims that it’s not unusual for management to give him 50 percent of the personnel he’s supposed to have, while still holding him and his officers responsible for covering 100 percent of the calls for that sector.
“He’s a pit bull,†said retired patrol officer Steve Mauser, 43, who left the department after suffering a spinal injury on the job in 1997. “Dave asks the questions that no one else will ask. He’s not some scanner junkie to be [dismissed]; his numbers are right.â€Â
Jenest began to publicly question the chief’s budget priorities relating to the number of patrol officers on the street, both Serna and Venegas began a counter-attack, which included publicly questioning the extent of Jenest’s working relationship with officers.
“I’m sure a few officers … have worked with his so-called group,†Venegas said in May 1999. “Maybe one or two officers … the kind of officers, frankly, that we may be having problems with, the ones who are … feeding him information.â€Â
But the more than 15 officers interviewed for this story–ranking sergeants, supervisors and patrol officers, either on-the-job, retired or about to resign–claimed that Jenest is correct when he says that the lives of officers and the lives of Sacramento residents are being jeopardized by the elimination of minimum staffing levels and the low number of patrol officers on the street.
