You want me to vote where?

Greenfair HOA building,
my old polling place

I’d like to open up this forum for people to bitch and complain about their polling places. Mine was moved from its usual location at the Greenfair community room on Broadway, a tranquil, tree-covered setting with ample parking, to the County primary care center on the corner of Stockton & Broadway.

Any other Tahoe Parkers out there ready to write to the local officials and ask for Greenfair back?

Nay-saying on the IKEA carts

Bear with me as I get back into the swing of things here at the Rag by posting a few short bits to “prime the pump” as it were.

I’d like to say nay to the shopping carts at IKEA. While they might be great for maneuvering the the narrow aisles of the store (Note: Apparently the carts that look like normal shopping cars are not allowed on the second floor) have you ever tried covering a large distance with them? Like from your car to the front door? It is next to impossible without spinning out. If Volvos turned like this, East Sac would look like a demolition derby. However, they do spin in tight circles which is extremely fun for the kids.

Second item: Does anyone know a brick-and-mortar source for cheap, plain collar stays for point collar dress shirts? I’m hoping something like a Walgreens?

The party’s over, and I’m already late

This town moves pretty fast… local sports enthusiast Heckasac beat me to the punch on…Sunday’s Sacbee end-of-season report cards on the Kings (what was in the blogwater Monday morning, Sacto?). Sam Amick’s grading system seems horribly skewed toward performance in the playoffs, ignoring the 82 games that got the team there. For example, Wells… didn’t he miss, like 30 games? Miller gets a C, and Bibby gets a B? I just have to ask, what’s up with that, Sacramento?

Life reflects snark at the immigration walk-out

Yesterday, RonTopofIt and I joked that an alternate “evil” version of The Sac Rag might lament the fact that the Rag’s favorite taqueria, La Fiesta, would be closed in deference to the massive protest/walk-out. Well, if any of you enjoyed yourselves some “24” last night and stuck around for the Fox 40 newscast, you may have caught Joe Orlando’s reporting on the day’s events, which included as a jokey closing remark that the protests had hit too close to home because his own favorite taqueria, La Favorita was closed for the day. 😦

On a side note, CoolDMZ would like to give a big thumbs up to El Novillero on Franklin Blvd for making their own way in the world. Owner Jose Davalos decided to stay open yesterday against the wishes of nameless thugs who tried to intimidate his staff over the phone:

“The callers were trying to intimidate us into closing. When my son and other employees said that yes, we would be open, the callers said that was bad.”

El Novillero’s employees, most of Mexican descent, didn’t want Monday off, Davalos said.

“They wanted to work,” he said. “That’s why they came to this country.”

Two Apiece

Can anybody recommend a pharmacy that delivers to your place of work? Because I’ve got what might prove to be a fatal case of Kings Fever, and I know I’m not the only one!!

And the winner is… fusion cuisine

Anybody else out there catch Food Network’s “Next Food Network Star“? What I enjoyed most about this show was how positive the producers managed to keep it; the finale episode’s season recap featured only positive comments about each of the departed candidates, even the ones who literally couldn’t julienne a carrot (literally).

Well, apparently it’s news only to me that Guy Fieri, winner of the contest, is a Norcal resident and is opening a restaurant here in Sacto: Tex Wasabi’s, the still under construction fusion restaurant at Howe & Arden in the burned-out remains of another restaurant (I think it was burned-out remains, but you never know with fusion cuisine… they might be going for that burned-out look).

Rookie mistakes, and this principal ain’t my pal

Interesting story in today’s Bee about Sac City Unified’s problems with teacher turnover and inexperience. Paints an overall dismal picture of SCUSD’s future: rookie teachers in SCUSD deserve a big Sac Rag RIGHT AWN.

You know who doesn’t? Kathy Kingsbury, principal at Pacific Elementary School, who praises her inexperienced staff but complains “the biggest hassle is everybody having babies all the time.” I know, right? How dare they. You know what would help Kathy Kingsbury’s job a lot, is nobody actually having babies at any time. No whining mouths to feed and/or educate. I hope for her sake that any of her teachers currently out on maternity leave found something else to read this morning, though in that case they’d have missed what was otherwise a pretty eye-opening piece.

(Nutjob translation to this post: Right, because unless our womenfolk start popping out 30 apiece, we’ll have to start taking Mohammad’s piano piece Czechoslovakia bacon hat.)

“Family” “Fun” at Raley Field (Rivercats 7, Raniers 3)

Enjoyed another night game at Raley Field last night. Thursday nights are “Crystal $1 Family Feast” nights, featuring hot dogs and ice cream bars for $1 each. The ‘Cats were knocking the ball around and indeed went on to win 7-3. (Props to Keith Ginter!)

The family fun got even funner when Jose Morban, last night’s “K-MAN” struck out, winning each attendee a free entree at…Hooters! That’s right, “Family Feast” night featured a prize sponsored by everybody’s favorite owl-themed family restaurant. In another mind-numbing scheduling faux pas, Thursday nights are also “Rivercats Idol” nights, sponsored by Heineken. Strap the kids in the SUV and head down to Raley Field for $1 hot dogs, Dinger bobbleheads, and ta-tas and beer.

And now, for something complete fake

My dad brought to my attention PR Watch’s report on TV news stations airing video news releases (VNRs), which are video press releases produced by corporations, the government, or non-governmental organizations for easy “plug-and-play” use by news stations. Often the local outfits will create what looks like an editorial piece that, in actuality, consists mostly of video footage given to them by one of these organizations (and which obviously slants in favor of the organization) without any disclaimers about the source of the content.

Two hits in Sacramento (KMAX 31 and Fox40) on their list of 77 stations, both regarding the American Dental Association’s spot on a new screening technique that uses saliva. You always knew they were crooked, didn’t you. Yes, I’m talking about all three.

Rivercats, opening night

Opening night – 4/14/06

The family and I had an amazing time at opening night at Raley Field last night. We only made it through 1 and 1/2 frames, but the seats are great, as you can see (they belong to my father-in-law, “FIL CoolDMZ”), and the atmosphere really makes you happy you live in Sac.

Side note to the woman in Section 112, row 29, seat 22 who shushed my 3 year old daughter during the National Anthem: are you a season ticket holder? If so, we might have a problem… (and kudos to the SMUD worker (didn’t catch the name) who also saw you, miss Fun Police, and mentioned it to me on the sly. Right awn Mr. Smud PR guy!!)
