Good work, if you can get it

News10.net runs a story about how there will now be “Fewer police on Sacramento streets” because of, well you know, the economy.

Data collected from the Bureau of Justice statistics shows: In 2007, the national average for city police to residents ratio was 2.3 officers for every 1,000 residents. By comparison, after this most recent layoff, Sacramento has 659 sworn officers – giving the city about 1.45 sworn officers to every 1,000 residents. That’s nearly 2/3 the 2007 national average.

Now, they’re are not saying you should go commit a crime now, but they are positioned to tell you “I told you so” if you did. Or, am I missing the point of this story? You have a 25 million dollar budget deficit. You have to cut jobs, right? Or, maybe salaries?

Then, I hop over to sacbee.com where I learn that “Sac Metro’s new chief played role in Vallejo bankruptcy” which is another clever headline. Continue reading “Good work, if you can get it”

An insensitive comparison

This story about the mom allegedly microwaving her baby is making national headlines (really, thumbnails of actual microwaves by many of the teasers?) which means our fair city is receiving a little attention. The folks over at PETA have taken this opportunity to compare their efforts to not eating meat, I think.

In the wake of Tuesday’s arrest of a Sacramento woman for allegedly microwaving her infant daughter, PETA is negotiating with Sacramento outdoor advertisers to place a billboard in the city that features the image of a person who is about to pop a pork chop into the microwave next to a picture of a loving mother pig and reads, “Everybody’s Somebody’s Baby. Go Vegan.”

The media ran with the press release, too.

Asked about Yang’s conflicting statements to police and her suggestion that she suffers from multiple personalities, Parisi said “one’s psychological stability is sometimes responsible” for such responses. Told about PETA’s proposed billboard, Parisi grimaced. “That certainly seems to me a very insensitive comparison,” she said.

Indeed. Let’s hope this doesn’t go the way of the Casey Anthony story.

Sacramento joins list of worst

A Sacramento job seeker
This creative job seeker feels the pain

We usually can’t go more than a few months without learning of a list Sacramento has made. Yesterday, I came across this list from usnews.com (I’m behind, it’s from May) letting me know that Sacramento “topped” a list along with Riverside and Las Vegas. There is one thing I know about cities in the United States and that is you never want to be mentioned with Riverside or Las Vegas. This particular list, of course, has us placing as the third worst city for job seekers in America.

Unemployment rate: 12.7 percent…Unemployed people per job posting: 3.10…Construction employment in Sacramento was down 8.8 percent in April from one year prior. The trade, transportation, and utilities sector also continues to shed jobs.

We were grouped in as “Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville” though which means, well, I’m not sure what it means other than we share the honor with another city and a census-designated place. Which is, as everyone knows, a principal locality of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Take that, Rancho Cordova!

The Center for Sacramento History’s mystery image

A photo of the “blight” in Sacramento

I was browsing the Center for Sacramento History’s website this morning when I came across this mystery image they would like your help in identifying.

Please assist Center for Sacramento History staff in helping to identify this mystery image. Any information you can provide about the image context – or the who, what, when, where, and why is appreciated. This image is from the Theodore Leonard Collection donated in 2001. The 35mm black and white negative was taken to document the “blight” in Sacramento as part of Mr. Leonard’s work with the Sacramento Redevelopment Agency and likely dates c.1955.

Say what?

While I’m on the topic, my son’s 4-H group recently toured the Archives and loved it. It’s a local treasure, for sure.

And speaking of mystery images, where was the Ghetto Grotto Drive-in?

Woz Cup Challenge comes to Folsom

Upright handlebars ergonomically designed to maximize loss of dignity

The Folsom Telegraph brings us news that Prairie City Stadium at Folsom High will host the sixth annual Segway Polo Woz Challenge Cup 2011. I’ve read this article 3 or 4 times now and I still can’t figure out if it’s an Onion story or what.

The Segway Polo Woz Challenge Cup is basically polo on Segways, rather than on horses. Five players make up a team; two forwards, two midfielders and a goalie. Players ride their Segways, which max-out at 12 ½ miles per hour, and swing padded mallets at the equivalent of a Nerf soccer ball toward a goal 8-feet wide and 5-feet tall.

Well, I’ll be. Twelve teams from around the world will compete for the Woz Cup, the perpetual trophy named after Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Inc.

In a short amount of time in a sport that few know about, Ross, fellow Rotarian and Folsom resident Bob Quinlan and a handful of others have put together quite an event with the city’s support. “We’re going to bring hundreds of thousands of dollars to the city and Sutter Street businesses,” Ross said.

Like 100s of 1000s? Whoa. Well, good on you then. Learn more at wozcup2011.com.

How many of you immediately thought of GOB riding his Segway when you read this post?

In-N-Out restaurant to open on Alta Arden

Map of Alta Arden Expressway
A new dead zone?

From sacbee.com

Irvine-based In-N-Out Burger plans to open an outlet at the site of the former Romano’s Macaroni Grill at 2001 Alta Arden Expressway. The plan calls for the Macaroni Grill building to be torn down and a new In-N-Out restaurant to be built on the site.

That’s great and all, I love a good burger, but I don’t get this particular location for any sort of business. How did Macaroni Grill fail, while Mimi’s Cafe is still up and running? Not to mention Chick-fil-A. It seems like every time I am in that part of town I can’t turn right, or have to make a u-turn, or risk jumping three lanes at once to get where I need to go.

So, should this area be added to our dead zone list? Or, is it just a matter of hitting a consumer price point just so?

SacTweetup is Trending

I logged into the Twitter pages this morning to find that #sactweetup was one of the top “Trends” along side #gleefinale, Hines Ward, Lebron, and Vancouver.

From alejandroreyes.com

Last night we hosted our 23rd SacTweetup and this by far has been the most successful one hands down. With over 200 people at the Blue Cue, the place was en fuego and people were connecting like crazy.

I’ve never been completely sold on the Tweetup idea, but this is a cool thing for Sacramento and for the folks that put the event together.
