Tookie-watch

I’m not going to say much on the whole Stan “Tookie” Williams clemency issue, other than to comment on how silly the rap music they’re playing on NewsTalk 1530 KFBK sounds during their 48-hour continuous will-he-or-won’t-he-be-spared coverage.

It just don’t sound right on your station, man.

(Interestingly enough, as of this writing, no mention of this news story on their website despite the on-air coverage.)

Game Guy on GDS Tomorrow

Just got the heads-up from Game Guy Scott Fera that he’ll be on Good Day Sacramento tomorrow during the 7 and 8:00 hours to talk about one of his favorite new games, “Guitar Hero.”

UPDATE: The 7:00 hour appearance was top-notch local television, with Game Guy showing his chops on the classic “Iron Man,” the anchor’s desk playing right into the fun, and Tina Macuha getting into character as a rabid groupie.

Joncich, Whitney Out

According to my morning paper, Paul Joncich and Jennifer Whitney are being replaced as anchors of the evening news on CBS 13. The only confirmed new face is Sam Shane, who is pictured on that link in a location that makes it seem like he is the writer, Sam McManis. Funny.

The other replacement hasn’t been named and it looks like KOVR wants to downplay the role of anchor #2. So Sam is the man for now. I wonder if it’ll be a reporter from another station? That could be a good play.

Ixnay on the Acism-ray

If I have to hear one more time how Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, being put up by the Sacramento Catholic diocese for sainthood, was “known as the ‘lowrider’ bishop“, I’m not sure what I’ll do but it will be full of righteous indignation. Has anyone actually heard the phrase “barrio bishop” or “lowrider bishop” before, say, this weekend? I only remember him being called “Bishop Gallegos” or “the Auxiliary Bishop” or “Alphonse” (non-Catholics my think that’s a joke, but there’s actually this one prayer during mass that goes “Jesus this Jesus that blah blah bow your heads, [INSERT FIRST NAME OF BISHOP].”)

While we’re at it, can we re-re-name the Alhambra Blvd. Safeway store “Alhambra Safeway,” and reserve the word “ghetto” for its literal meaning, namely the part of town reserved for mistreated minorities.

On second thought, this may be a losing cause. Check out this screenshot of Merriam-Webster’s and the Google ads I got when I searched for the snarky real definition of “ghetto.” Ugh.

Tina’s Thoughts

If you’ve lived in Sacramento for a long time, Tina Macuha is one of those local media people, like Stan Atkinson or that Australian guy on KWOD, whose voice and/or image gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling, like Sacramento is a thick wool blanket, smothering the very life out of you. Tina’s current haunt is the traffic desk at Good Day, where every morning she posts an Oprah-esque quote, fresh from the HP Laserjet (today’s was “Feed Your Soul” or something). Her “Sign of the Day,” I see it’s called as I read her bio.

My gut reaction is annoyance, because so often the phrase makes no sense or gives helpful advice only for someone who had just recently said to themselves, “you know, what my life really needs right now is a pat answer to a question I wasn’t asking.” But then the Sacto homer in me kicks in, and I wonder why she has to resort to printing these things up herself and littering her little workspace with them. From the morning show on FM 102 back in the 80s to being an original “Good Day” host, Tina Macuha owns this town. Couldn’t they maybe spare a nice plaque or frame or something? Maybe a graphic?

Arrr, Matey, News10 Strikes Again

Ok, News10, you are making this WAY too easy for us here at the Sac Rag. Today’s headline “Schwarzenegger Begins Trade Trip in China” (eBish, btw) lets us know that the Governor is in China “pumping” up trade while trying to “buff” up his political image. Ok, ok, I’ll let the bodybuilding puns slide, although I do commend the effort, but the last sentence is just too good to be true.

Schwarzenegger is in China to promote California piracy and encourage Chinese officials to crack down on piracy.

That’s right California, your Governor wants you to get out those blank CDs and DVDs and get to work helping your financially strapped buddies out and reject those cheap Asian knock-offs! Now that’s an initiative I’d back any day of the week!

UPDATE (from CoolDMZ): Well, it’s 12:15 and that link still says “promote California piracy”…

UPDATE 2 (from CoolDMZ): At 12:19 the story was updated but there was no correction, which means it must not be a typo…

UPDATE 3 I know, I know, you all have moved on, but it is a day later and the story has been updated several times and piracy still reigns supreme…nice work, ebish.

End of an Era

By now I suppose most of you have heard that Kevin “The Rat” Radich is leaving the Rise Guys after today to move to the Bay Area, where his wife has been living (she’s a radio weatherperson). I’m not a frequent Rise Guys listener, so this is news to me. In researching this morning I found a gem of a Web page about Sac radio history.

A great detail in the Sac Bee story is that the other Rise Guys gave the Rat crap about choosing the girl (his wife) over sports. Oh really? I wonder if they came up with some hilarious comedy schtick to go along with it, like making a cat sound and then a whipping sound. Bros before ho’s!!
