Everybody’s Working for the Weekend

Kenny Loggins, Loverboy, Boyz II Men, REO Speedwagon, Sinbad, Village People, Rick Springfield, Ted Nugent and Tesla. The cast of a new reality show where washed up celebrities go on diets or blind dates? NO. The soundtrack to your upcoming high school reunion? NO. The leftover Karaoke choices at the end of a long night on a cheesy cruise to Ensenada (she asks from experience)? Alas, no.

My friends, these are the headline acts for the California State Fair starting this Friday. Are we not California? Can we not do better than this? It’s bad enough that it will be hot and the parking overpriced but really, Tesla?

Today Streets of London, tomorrow the world

CoolDMZ makes headlines again… If any readers were participants in last night’s Streets of London Sunday night pub trivia contest, I hope you enjoyed getting schooled in ridiculous fashion by CoolDMZ and his siblings and parents, hereinafter the “CoolDMZ Good-time Family Trivia Band.” Our group–my parents, my brother and sister and her fiancee, with the collective power of our above average IQs and specialized tools like my brother with the rock trivia knowledge and my mom with the… remembering of stuff that happened before 2003 (Haille Selassie!!!) got 25 out of 30 and the tiebreaker, taking the house for all it was worth, which was 2 British-themed dinners to be consumed at a later date.

Free Coffee (sort of)

You regulars know that Peet’s Coffee & Tea is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. They are offering free cups of coffee every day from 1pm to 3pm (this week Garuda, next week Major Dickason’s!). Here’s a calendar to keep track (also available in the store).

You’ll notice that they are also offering a free 1/4 lb of coffee on Fridays from 1pm to close. It’s vague on the signs in the store, but worth noting this detail:

COMPLIMENTARY BEANS
Every Friday take home a complimentary bag of beans with any purchase, as you take a journey through Peet’s history.

This is a cool gesture and all, but the words “free” (or in this case “complimentary”) and “purchase” shouldn’t be used in the same sentence. Unless it’s “no purchase necessary” of course.

For you gamers out there…

I’d love to give some free publicity to ConQuest Sacramento, “A gaming convention with a sci-fi flair” which will be taking place this weekend (April 7-9) at the Red Lion Inn. Special events include a costume contest hosted by one of my favorite local celebrities, Mr. Lobo, and a “questing through time” (this year’s theme) movie marathon including such time-travel hits as “TimeCop,” “Back to the Future,” and “Bill And Ted’s” (shorthand I suppose for a double feature of Excellent Adventure as well as Bogus Journey, though I don’t recall the Bogus Journey having a time-travel theme–didn’t they go to H-E double hockey sticks?). Gather your plastic tube of dice and put on your mage’s robe and giant fighting robot pilot helmet and join the fun.

Mather Airport Hosts Airshow

Mather Airport is hosting the 2006 California Capital Airshow, featuring the Blue Angels this weekend.

Route 75 will depart from the Mather/Mills Station every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.each day of the show. Complimentary RT daily passes will be available to riders after boarding Route 75
  • Admission tickets for the California Capital Air Show are $10 for advance purchase or $15 at the door. Children 12 and under are free. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the show ends at 4 p.m.

Update: The Web site is back up. You can purchase tickets in advance at all Heritage Community Credit Unions & at the Sacramento International, Mather, & Executive airports.

For those who need an excuse to drink

SacTicket.com offers up 9 places to visit tonight to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Mikuni one was pretty good:

OK, so Mikuni isn’t really doing anything big for St. Patrick’s Day (hello, it’s a sushi place), but we thought the one thing they are doing was so cute, it deserved a mention. Apparently, people are always thinking it is an Irish pub when they hear the name out of context, so the folks at Mikuni have made up T-shirts that spell the name as if it were a Celtic watering hole, selling a McCooney’s tee for $20; the staff will be sporting them today.

If I were to enjoy this sort of tomfoolery, I’d be stopping by the Bonn Lair. I have reason to believe that the corned beef and cabbage will be second to none.

Nothing to do in Sac? Pffft

People always tell me there’s nothing to do in Sacramento. Ha! I say. I seem to keep myself busy so what’s your problem? Well it looks like some folks out there seem to agree with my friends. So I thought I’d help ya’ll out again this weekend. It looks like rain for most of the weekend so you’ll have to stay in if you want to stay dry. What’s always been my favorite activity for rainy days? Coloring! Yup, I’m a dood and I like to color. Say what you will. Here’s a bunch of coloring books online ready to be filled with your imagination. And for those of you who haven’t gotten enough of the Chroni-(what?!)-cles of Narnia here’s one for you.

If you actually want to leave the house on Saturday the zoo is having a Bloomin’ Crazy Plant Fest. This is the first year it’s happening so I don’t know what to expect but those botanists are a crazy bunch so it should be a rip-roaring good time.

And what better a way to finish off God’s day then SUPREME PRO WRESTLING!!! Speaking of rasslin… This guy has a ton of info on Nor Cal wrestling in case your bored this friday afternoon. Actually if you’re a chick you could always drive out to Roller King (889 Riverside Ave.) to practice with the newly forming River City Roller Girls. Ahh nothing ends a nice full weekend like busted noses and blood on your roller skates.

OK, so if that isn’t something to do I don’t know what is.
