Right Awn! Friday: Get your paws off me!

This week Right Awn! Friday would like to remind you all to be careful out there. There are a lot of scams floating around. People get you coming and they get you going.

But, before I continue, here’s another shoutout to MyMotherLode.com, which is quickly becoming a Sac Rag favorite.

After all, they brought us this story…

Get this story of the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) getting scammed. First of all, I had no idea that there was a society to take care of performing animals, based, of all places, in Galt. Is this where Robin Williams is hiding?

Here’s a couple of highlights of the story:

Last week it received the donation and, assuming the money was in the bank, it immediately began spending it.

However, the bank called to say the check was a forgery and part of a scam.

You know, these days, you simply can’t trust anyone anymore – even those as seemingly innocent enough to send you a check for $95,000. PAWS’ mistake of course, was to spend that money before the check actually cleared. Maybe they wanted to spend it before anyone asked for it back.

So what does a nonprofit that gets themselves into a cash crunch do?

PAWS Founder Pat Derby said a forged check replacement fund has been set up.

That’s right. The Forged Donation Check Replacement Fund. I have to admit, for me, that’s a tough sell. They could have just called it the “We Spent Money We Didn’t Have So Give Us Yours Fund”. But hey, PAWS, your cause is noble, and we aren’t totally insensitive, so here’s our donation to your fund… RIGHT AWN!

  1. I hereby initiate the “Buy Quicken” chapter of the “Help PAWS find a new office manager/accountant foundation.” Why would they possibly spend that money before the check cleared? In the words of Job, “Come AWN!”

  2. Is this the one where PAWS cashes the check for the Nigerian prince who needs help getting money out of the bank? I’m wondering when the rest of the story will surface and we’ll learn that PAWS accepted the check for $95,000 as a $50,000 donation and gave the Nigerian Prince $45,000 change.

I’m starting the “ADD A SNOPES.COM BOOKMARK to the PAWS BROWSER” fund.
