Music Circus auditions!

Please sir, be anti-child labor. And no, I don't mean labor that is opposed to children

Think you got what it takes to be a London fishmonger, a playactin’ cowpoke, or a hanger-on to a Knight of the Round Table? Well, your chance to find out may be coming! California Musical Theatre (one of our gracious sponsors) hosts auditions for the 2011 season of Music Circus, featuring such shows as Oliver!, Annie Get Your Gun, and Camelot.

Sacramento auditions for non-Equity singers and actors (ages 16 and above) will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 1-2, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Pavilion, 1419 H Street, Sacramento by appointment only. Appointments may be scheduled by calling the audition hotline at (916) 446-5880, ext. 137, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23-35, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Calls will only be accepted during these hours (no messages please).

In addition, there are separate dance auditions and auditions for members of Actors’ Equity, but if you’re in one of those groups you are not getting your audition notices from this blog.

CAKE chart topper is death of music industry?

Good news for Sacramento’s own CAKE band, whose new album “Showroom of Compassion” opened at #1 on the Billboard charts for the week! However, it did so by selling only 44,000 copies, the lowest high sales mark in Billboard history (beating out Taylor Swift). McCrea and co shouldn’t get too comfortable in that spot as you know the record won’t last. But still, that’s great for their “comeback album” to get some interest.

I know that I have not bought a compacted disc since the Clinton administration, but I’m also not sweating it. The only development of the new music industry paradigm that worries me is that bands now have to do almost anything but focus on selling records if they want to make money, which could lead to more selling out. For example, there is no way in hockey sticks that Vampire Weekend didn’t have a discussion of whether J Crew or Old Navy commercials would be better suited for their song “Holiday.” (Or is it much less sinister than that? Does Old Navy just go through the record label to purchase a song for their winter launch?)

P.S., yes, I know I used Cake and death in the title of the post. Wasn’t that like 4 years ago now though?

Sacramento Museum Day is coming

Fairytale Town is on the list!?

The 13th Annual Sacramento Museum Day will be on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All participating museums close at 5 p.m. with the last guests admitted at 4 p.m.

From this latimes.com article:

Though it’s tempting to museum-hop until you drop, realistically you’ll be able to squeeze in only two or three museums on the free day. The museum association also offers the following advice…Expect a wait at the more popular sites such as the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento Zoo and the Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park. Park your car and use a free shuttle that services most of the museums on the list.

There are 26 museums participating in this year’s event so this is a good opportunity to visit a museum less traveled.

Lockdown television series features Sacramento

I was skipping through the channels last night when I came across an airing of National Geographic’s Lockdown series.

This episode featured Sacramento, and not in a fun, “hey, we have a lot of trees are close to San Francisco“, way.

Filled with nearly 2,500 inmates accused of everything from drugs to kidnapping to torture, Sacramento County Jail faces a huge problem: maintaining order and control in a highly overcrowded space with a dwindling number of officers.

It was powerful stuff. Using toilets to communicate with other inmates, applying martial arts moves to subdue unruly inmates, it was all there. Shows like this remind me that we are very fortunate to have people in this world who are willing to take on jobs so others don’t have to. For now, of course, as budget cuts continue to dominate the plot lines.

“A bit of ‘Wow'” coming to K Street

'But God is like, holding a guitar'

Via Heckasac (now with image banners! but still no hyperlinks) enjoy this Sac Press article on the choice monuments to douchebaggery coming soon to Midtown:

Pizza Rock, with its red neon sign and laser-cut metal flames, seems to burst from between its two sister venues. Filigreed flowers, hearts, stars and butterflies – designed to look like tattoo art – soften the sign, inspired by tattoos worn by Pizza Rock co-owner Tony Gemignani’s wife. LED backlights will be added to give the flame a shadow.

Downtown IMAX gets a CLU

This guy. That's all I can come up with.

Fans of Jeff Bridges, Daft Punk, and neon rejoice! The release of Tron: Legacy is upon us. If you are as ridiculously excited about the long-awaited sequel (it’s been 20 28 years). You can celebrate at the Esquire Imax tonight.

This tweet, just in:

Thursday, December 16, the Esquire IMAX Theatre will be attempting to break a Guinness Book World Record™ for the Longest Glow Stick (at least in Sacramento’s history) in honor of the opening of TRON: Legacy in IMAX 3D!

The event will take place at 9 p.m. on K Street between the Esquire IMAX Theatre at 1211 K
Street and (hopefully) the Downtown Ice Rink at 7th and K Streets.

All participants will receive a $3 off coupon to see TRON: Legacy in IMAX 3D at the Esquire IMAX Theare after it opens at Midnight that night

So put down your game of Space Paranoids, tell your User you’ll be out of the house tonight, hop on your lightcycle, and drop by the Esquire IMAX to hold a glow stick for a while. It’ll be the most conservative rave you’ve ever been to.

End of Line.

Michael Jackson’s carnival rides for rent

Photo of the Dragon Wagon.
This is the “Dragon Wagon”
(uh, uh, huh, I said Dragon Wagon)

Back in 2009, the California State Fair had a promotion that fairgoers couldn’t beat (waka waka).

On Fridays, Butler Amusements will give the first 5,000 people through the gates a golden ticket good for one free ride on one of the four Neverland Ranch rides debuting at the State Fair.

Now these rides are available for rent.

A total of six attractions from the late singer’s Neverland ranch amusement park are available via Butler Amusements, although one of them now has a permanent home at the California State Fair and Exposition in Sacramento.

The cheapest ride will run you $5,000! Would someone really rent these *because* they were once ridden by the King of Pop?

American Idol contestant to perform at tree lighting

According to snarkyarchies.com (I smell a snark-off in the making), David Archuleta will be performing at the State Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony tomorrow evening.
